Activity 2

Children's protective services: casa - children in foster care are paired with volunteer court appointed special advocates (casa) who advocate for them as they navigate the confusing world of the child protection system. These volunteers, also called guardians ad litem, give magistrate judges a fact-based recommendation based upon research and investigation as to what is in the child's best interest. Volunteers give children a voice and are the only party involved who is exclusively there to make sure the children are in a safe, stable home. Last year the casa program served 601 children. Approximately $502,062 of donated time was given by 175 volunteer guardians (7,156 donated hours) and 110 lawyers (289 donated hours). That would have otherwise been paid for by the counties and taxpayers.

Activity 3

Parenting education programs: families first - provides parent education and support services to families with children prenatal through age 12 through home visits, community presentations and parenting workshops. More than 863 families were served directly by idaho pircs. The program uses the parents as teachers (pat) curriculum. Parents as teachers is an award-winning early childhood parent education and family support approach designed to help parents of children newborn to age five. The vision of the pat curriculum is that all parents will be their child's first, best teachers. The program is free and voluntary. Essential components of the pat project include the following: home visits by parent educators certified in the pat curriculum; group meetings with other parents; periodic screening of overall child development, language, hearing and vision; linking of families with community resources for needed services
