Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our exempt purpose is to destigmatize mental illness, to build communities designed to foster mental health, and to support youth movements around hope, communication, and inner strength. We are a strong, youth-driven movement that is tired of the silence surrounding mental illness; we are ready to move mountains to bring change and remind folks that there is help and hope out there. We are tired of the deafening silence around this topic. We are tired of the stigma that keeps people from reaching out and getting the help that they need. We are tired of suffering in silence and we are tired of losing our friends to suicide. One-in-five people worldwide suffer from mental illness; our mission is to end the stigma surrounding mental illness, and to build a community of people who realize that hope happens when youth and community leaders work together. We hope that someday mental illness will be as normal to talk about as any physical illness, and we're dedicated to realizing this goal.

The Organizations engages with an independent accounting firm to prepare its annual Form 990. Drafts of the Form 990 are provided to and reviewed by the Organization's Executive Director, Treasurer, and other members of the board for their consideration and approval prior to filing.

The Organization maintains a conflict of interest policy that is provided to each director upon their election to the Board, and at any time the policy is amended or updated. Board members are required to review the Organization's policy, acknowledge that they have read and understand the policy, and must disclose any known or potential conflicts to the Organization and its Board both at the time of their election and/or when any new conflicts arise.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

It is the formal policy of the Organization that directors shall not receive any stated salary for their services as directors of the board; provided, however, that, by resolution of the Board, the directors may be reimbursed for expenses incurred in the performance of their duties and the expenses of attendance, if any, at each regular or special meeting of the Board, and that, except as otherwise provided by law, the Organization's Articles and Bylaws, no director shall be precluded from serving the Corporation in any other capacity and receiving compensation for such service. The Board or a duly authorized committee thereof may fix the compensation, if any, of the President. The compensation of all other officers and employees of the Corporation shall be fixed by the President, subject to the Board's power to approve the annual budget. In general, individuals who are employees of the Corporation shall not be voting members of the Board. In those instances, however, where an individual is both a member of the Board and an employee, as a voting member of the Board who receives compensation from the Corporation either directly or indirectly, he or she is precluded from voting on matters pertaining to his or her compensation.

IRS990/Desc0Our message of hope, community, and stigma reduction continued to resonate to more and more young people and adult allies, as seen by the steady increase of youth ambassadors and new communities joining our youth-led momentum in 2023. We are well aware of the staggering numbers of youth suicides and the surging youth mental health crisis in our country, and continue to be fiercely committed to making a difference in this important space. We now have 620+ youth ambassadors actively bringing YTP's programming and Hope Gardens to their schools, with new ambassadors joining in 2023.(Continued on Schedule O)In addition, hope gardeners planted bulbs in 2023 in new Hope Gardens. We know that talking about and addressing mental health at earlier ages is so important, and in 2023 we received funding to expand our Creative Daily Practice and Art Based Nature Programming to new elementary and middle schools across the United States. We also received funds to pilot a new arts program for BIPOC youth called EXPRESS, as well as funds to produce 'Young Men Moving Mountains', an exhibit geared towards smashing the particular mental health stigma that young men face.In 2022 we went through a rigorous interview process to identify youth leaders to sit on our first Youth Leadership Board (YLB). In 2023, we revised the model to pay 7 young people at a professional level to engage on Our Team. Each YLB leader directs a committee and they work together to plan events and programs. We know that we are continuing to make a difference in schools and communities based on the results of our 2023 post-event surveys. For example, our surveys indicated that: - 96% of individuals felt more connected to their communities after participating in an YTP event; - 88% of individuals felt YTP events helped to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness; and - 88% of individuals felt more hopeful after participating in a YTP event. Finally, in 2023, we were selected to present at national and international conferences and events including: hosting the roundtable dialogue "Smash the Stigma: Youth Voices on Mental Health in the Arctic" with the Arctic Council; Presented the Keynote speech at The GFWC Fall Conference; and presented at the Maine Youth Action Network Fall Conference and hosted the library talk series "Let's Talk About it!" at various library events nationwide.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3It is the formal policy of the Organization that directors shall not receive any stated salary for their services as directors of the board; provided, however, that, by resolution of the Board, the directors may be reimbursed for expenses incurred in the performance of their duties and the expenses of attendance, if any, at each regular or special meeting of the Board, and that, except as otherwise provided by law, the Organization's Articles and Bylaws, no director shall be precluded from serving the Corporation in any other capacity and receiving compensation for such service. The Board or a duly authorized committee thereof may fix the compensation, if any, of the President. The compensation of all other officers and employees of the Corporation shall be fixed by the President, subject to the Board's power to approve the annual budget. In general, individuals who are employees of the Corporation shall not be voting members of the Board. In those instances, however, where an individual is both a member of the Board and an employee, as a voting member of the Board who receives compensation from the Corporation either directly or indirectly, he or she is precluded from voting on matters pertaining to his or her compensation.
