Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our exempt purpose is to destigmatize mental illness, to build communities designed to foster mental health, and to support youth movements around hope, communication, and inner strength. We are a strong, youth-driven movement that is tired of the silence surrounding mental illness; we are ready to move mountains to bring change and remind folks that there is help and hope out there. We are tired of the deafening silence around this topic. We are tired of the stigma that keeps people from reaching out and getting the help that they need. We are tired of suffering in silence and we are tired of losing our friends to suicide. One-in-five people worldwide suffer from mental illness; our mission is to end the stigma surrounding mental illness, and to build a community of people who realize that hope happens when youth and community leaders work together. We hope that someday mental illness will be as normal to talk about as any physical illness, and we're dedicated to realizing this goal.

To build communities designed to foster mental health awareness and to support youth movements around hope.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

The Organizations engages with an independent accounting firm to prepare its annual Form 990. Drafts of the Form 990 are provided to and reviewed by the Organization's Executive Director, Treasurer, and other members of the board for their consideration and approval prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The Organization maintains a conflict of interest policy that is provided to each director upon their election to the Board, and at any time the policy is amended or updated. Board members are required to review the Organization's policy, acknowledge that they have read and understand the policy, and must disclose any known or potential conflicts to the Organization and its Board both at the time of their election and/or when any new conflicts arise.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

It is the formal policy of the Organization that directors shall not receive any stated salary for their services as directors of the board; provided, however, that, by resolution of the Board, the directors may be reimbursed for expenses incurred in the performance of their duties and the expenses of attendance, if any, at each regular or special meeting of the Board, and that, except as otherwise provided by law, the Organization's Articles and Bylaws, no director shall be precluded from serving the Corporation in any other capacity and receiving compensation for such service. The Board or a duly authorized committee thereof may fix the compensation, if any, of the President. The compensation of all other officers and employees of the Corporation shall be fixed by the President, subject to the Board's power to approve the annual budget. In general, individuals who are employees of the Corporation shall not be voting members of the Board. In those instances, however, where an individual is both a member of the Board and an employee, as a voting member of the Board who receives compensation from the Corporation either directly or indirectly, he or she is precluded from voting on matters pertaining to his or her compensation.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The Organization's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements and tax returns are available to the public upon request.

Form 990, Part VII, Director Compensation Disclosure:

The Organization frequently engages role models and leaders in its community to serve as Youth Directors. Youth Directors receive stipends from the Organization to engage young persons in their community, to foster relationships, to promote positive and healthy mental wellbeing and habits, and to encourage civic participation. Anna Mullen, who serves on the Organization's Board as the Student Representative, also serves the Organization as one of its Youth Directors. All compensation paid to Anna Mullen was for her services rendered as a Youth Director; she was not compensated for any services performed in her capacity as a voting member of the Board.

IRS990/Desc02021 was a very important year for The Yellow Tulip Project. We are well aware of the mental health impact of Covid-19 on communities and worked tirelessly throughout the year to spread our message of hope and stigma reduction further afield. Communities across New England and now the country have been responding to our simple message of hope and community building. This year, we expanded some of our existing programming, such as our adult education course "Let's Talk About the Elephant in the Room and our Storytelling Alchemy Course, to educate more individuals about mental health than ever. (Continued on Schedule O)Additionally, our Creative Daily Practice programming has spread to 7 schools. This October more communities than ever participated in planting gardens of yellow tulips and came together to discuss mental health. In 2021 we planted 162 new Hope Gardens. We also saw 81 engaged and passionate youth sign up to become YTP Ambassadors and help bring YTP's message of hope to their schools and communities. In June, we hosted a hybrid retreat on Peaks Island, ME, where members of our Youth Leadership Team came together for a day of activities, planning and reflectingOur Diversity & Equity Task Force - formed by Youth Ambassadors in June of 2020 to promote diversity, equity & inclusion across YTP's programming and operations - created the "Stigma Stories" lecture series. Stigma Stories is a forum where trained Youth Ambassadors who are trained storytellers share their unique intersectional experience and how it informs their experience dealing with mental health stigma. Our Youth Ambassadors knew how hard it would be for some to go back to school last fall after a year of virtual learning, so they created Care Kits of advice, tips and more to help our almost 500 global Youth Ambassadors make the transition a little less stressful. Some other accolades we are proud of:- Presented at National Conferences, including: NAMI, Maine Youth Action Network, Educate Maine and regional Library events- Featured in Forbes, on the front page of the Portland Press Herald, television appearances & more- Published a new website and updated branding, with help from the design virtuosos at Marine Lane.- Traveled our "I Am More: Facing Stigma" to Assumption College in Worcester, MA, and York and Ellsworth High Schools in Maine.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Suzanne Fox, who served as the Organization's Executive Director during the year, and Margie Fox, who served on the Organization's Board, share a family relationship.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1The Organizations engages with an independent accounting firm to prepare its annual Form 990. Drafts of the Form 990 are provided to and reviewed by the Organization's Executive Director, Treasurer, and other members of the board for their consideration and approval prior to filing.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The Organization maintains a conflict of interest policy that is provided to each director upon their election to the Board, and at any time the policy is amended or updated. Board members are required to review the Organization's policy, acknowledge that they have read and understand the policy, and must disclose any known or potential conflicts to the Organization and its Board both at the time of their election and/or when any new conflicts arise.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3It is the formal policy of the Organization that directors shall not receive any stated salary for their services as directors of the board; provided, however, that, by resolution of the Board, the directors may be reimbursed for expenses incurred in the performance of their duties and the expenses of attendance, if any, at each regular or special meeting of the Board, and that, except as otherwise provided by law, the Organization's Articles and Bylaws, no director shall be precluded from serving the Corporation in any other capacity and receiving compensation for such service.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4The Organization's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements and tax returns are available to the public upon request.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5The Organization frequently engages role models and leaders in its community to serve as Youth Directors.
