Mission

SHARE Sonoma County is dedicated to enhancing the health, wellness and dignity of those wishing to age in place, matched with those in need of permanent housing, creating community for all.

SHARE California (SHARE) is a home share matching program active in 23 cities and towns throughout Sonoma County, and a 501c3 nonprofit. We offer housing in exchange for an agreed level of support in the form of financial exchange (Rent Exchanges), assistance with household and/or personal tasks (Service Exchanges), or a combination of both. SHAREs target population is our aging community (those 60 years and older) and those homeless or at risk of homelessness. US Census data conservatively estimates that there are 60,000 empty bedrooms throughout Sonoma County among this population. The Census also estimates that aging baby boomers are projected to outnumber children for the first time in US history. This growing population throughout Sonoma County is currently 39% of the total population. IRS990/Desc0Shared Housing And Resource Exchange California (SHARE) was formed August 1, 2014, became a 501c3 nonprofit in September 2016. Entering its 8th year SHARE is a home share matching program that matches Home Seekers with Home Providers utilizing spare bedrooms. SHARE Sonoma County (a dba of SHARE) is active in multiple cities throughout Sonoma County. SHAREs target populations are seniors aged 60 years and older, those with disabilities, extremely low income, and those who are experiencing homelessness or imminently at risk of homelessness. This growing population throughout Sonoma County is currently 39% of the total population. Mostly we create housing for individuals and occasionally, we are able to place small families or single parents with child(ren). SHARE offers shared housing options in exchange for an agreed level of support in the form of financial exchange (Rent Exchanges), assistance with household and/or personal tasks (Service Exchanges), or a combination of both. Each participant is carefully screened and receives ongoing support from SHARE including conflict resolution when necessary. SHARE housing stock consists of empty bedrooms, J/ADUs, Finished Rooms Over a Garage (FROGs), cottages, RVs, etc. We frequently locate 2 bedroom units and match Seekers to become co-tenants, or match a new co-tenant with someone who has the ability to sublet and can no longer afford the 2-bedroom unit rental due to a decrease in income, often a direct result of this pandemic. Locating 2-bedroom units to share is an affordable housing option, as more apartment units become available throughout our county due to those choosing to move out of the area. SHARE helps utilize HUD vouchers and assists to facilitate approval of the voucher for the offered housing. Another program and growing housing opportunity for SHARE is its Community Houses, managed by SHARE to ensure each bedroom within the home is occupied at all times. The property owner lives elsewhere and allows SHARE to manage the vacant home, and ensure each room is rented at all times, as well as provide ongoing case management support. As SHAREs reputation grows, daily inquiries continue to increase from nonprofit, county and health agencies, and visits to our website. The average length of a home share is 1.5 years. With a low attrition rate, it is extremely rare that a Seeker returns to homelessness; rather program participation typically ends as participants move into their own subsidized housing, having maintained long waiting list(s) of 4+ years. In addition to providing ongoing supportive services, including conflict resolution, for as long as each home share/match remains intact, we have further developed the Resource Exchange portion of our nonprofit to incorporate resources and funding to help stabilize our extremely-low income clients who are in need of: GroceriesRefundable security depositsmoving expensesshort term motel lodging expensescell/phone expenseRenewal of homeowners insurancerental assistancecar maintenancemedical/dental co-paymentsgas expenses

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0SHARE California (SHARE) is a home share matching program active in 23 cities and towns throughout Sonoma County, and a 501c3 nonprofit. We offer housing in exchange for an agreed level of support in the form of financial exchange (Rent Exchanges), assistance with household and/or personal tasks (Service Exchanges), or a combination of both. SHAREs target population is our aging community (those 60 years and older) and those homeless or at risk of homelessness. US Census data conservatively estimates that there are 60,000 empty bedrooms throughout Sonoma County among this population. The Census also estimates that aging baby boomers are projected to outnumber children for the first time in US history. This growing population throughout Sonoma County is currently 39% of the total population. These empty bedrooms represent inexpensive, immediate, permanent/long-term housing for those in need of housing, whether homeless or at risk of homelessness. SHAREs focus is on seniors who are mostly between the ages of 65 and 98 and are house rich, cash poor and in need of additional income and/or services in order to remain home safely. We refer to these seniors as Providers and match them with those needing housing, Seekers. Seekers are largely extremely low- or low-income, on disability, receiving Med-Cal benefits, collecting Social Security/SSI/SSDI or General Assistance, and mostly between 52 and 80 years old. SHARE serves primarily individual Seekers with occasional opportunities for single parents with children. Through careful assessment SHARE creates matches based upon the needs and expectations of each participant. Completed matches for January 2020 doubled due to our newly trained Housing Specialist and Salesforce database. As SHAREs reputation grows, daily inquiries continue to increase from nonprofit, county and health agencies, and our website. Some of the increased demand is a result of wildfire survivors still in search of housing. SHARE helps utilizing vouchers and we are experiencing an increase in submissions to both County and City of Santa Rosa. If a participant receives notification that a voucher is approved, SHARE assists to ensure the voucher can be used in the existing home share. Each participant is carefully screened and receives ongoing support from SHARE including conflict resolution when necessary. Should the Provider pass away or move into a long-term care facility, SHARE creates a new housing placement for the Seeker and works closely with the family to ensure a smooth transition. The average length of a home share is 1.5 years. With an attrition rate of just 6%, it is extremely rare that a Seeker returns to homelessness; rather services typically end as participants move into their own subsidized housing.In order to minimize a return to homelessness and increase housing retention, SHARE utilizes thorough screening mechanisms, state-of-the-art assessment tools, criminal background checks (necessary due to the frailty of our seniors), standardized follow-up support, and effective conflict mediation. These tools help SHARE boast a 6% attrition rate. The heart of SHAREs success lies in its ability to create win-win situations between Providers and Seekers. Most Providers are house rich, cash poor and the extra income from renting a room enables them to pay utilities, property taxes and maintain their home. Moreover, SHAREs services decrease their isolation, loneliness, or being housebound. Such Providers are carefully matched with compatible Seekers who help meet their needs in exchange for reduced or no rent. Seekers find long-term housing stability and security. Both find companionship, mutual support and improved physical and emotional health and well-being. Outreach staff is critical to our success. Effective outreach combined with a cost-free program to Seekers translates into a very low barrier for entry.
