Mission and Program Overview

Mission

METAS is an organization that aims to spread training on blindness skills in Mexico though a lens of structured discovery and cultural sensitivity. We provide the expertise to teachers and professionals working with blind adults and children so that local professionals can continue to foster a positive atmosphere. We use research based practices in working with the blind and professionals in the field. METAS is a non profit organization working in Mexico to build a community of inclusion around blind and low vision students. Currently 60% of blind and low vision students in Mexico do not have access to any type of education. We hope to close that gap by working with educators and giving them the tools necessary to provide high quality instruction. With your help we can reach our goals of education for the blind in Mexico.

Cambiando Vidas (Changing Lives) Event. On June 15, through June 18, 2023 Metas hosted a Cambiando Vidas Project in McAllen, Texas. This is a four-day-program geared towards Spanish-speaking blind individuals who have limited access to rehabilitation opportunities in the United States. The 16 Participants, along with a family member, stayed at a hotel where the training took place. Blind instructors held daily living skills, technology, Braille, and orientation and mobility classes. All meals were provided along with an assortment of adaptive materials and technology. The goal of this program is to give blind Spanish-speaking participants an opportunity to experience during a short training what rehabilitation could do in their lives. We also work closely with their family members so that they can elevate the expectations that they have for their loved one. After the training we were able to see changes in both the participant's life and their family member because we help them put into practice what was learned during the short training. Some participants have very limited access to training opportunities so Metas tries to continue to bring them resources in Spanish and accessible to them.$22,731$22,731
One of many white cane day celebrations of 2023 took place in McAllen Texas. On Saturday October 21st, METAS recognized the meaning of independence that a white cane provides to blind individuals. Border residents with low vision and their families had an opportunity to network, learn of community resources, take a group walk using the white cane, and socialize during a lunch provided by METAS. After METAS welcomed the attendees, a city representative commemorated White Cane Safety Day, and a brief history of the official day was present to educate the public. ICanConnect and VAIL Valley Association for Independent Living were some of the resources participating in the celebration. METAS continues to make an impact with Spanish speaking communities by promoting independence and education about blindness.$2,269$2,269
