Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Chicago Fringe Opera is dedicated to presenting innovative vocal works with an emphasis on new and contemporary styles, engaging with the Chicago community through intimate and immersive performance experiences, and fostering and empowering local artists. In FY25 (tax year 2024), that included 1 full production, a 12-week class on operatic improvisation, a 1-day festival showcasing operatic crossover, and several special events

Perform classical vocal and chamber music through various staged and produced performances, and provide education on the artform. Performances include two mainstage operatic productions, 1-2 recitals, and other performances and community building events throughout the year. In our FY20 (tacx year 2019), we had an additional special performance initiative ("The Rosina Project") which was made possible through funding. Our fall 2019 production was Tom Waits' "Woyzeck" and our spring production was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic (Heggie and Scheer's "Two Remain"). Also canceled was a spring recital and two community events, all programmed for the first half 2020.

"Woyzeck," by Tom Waits - this project created an opportunity to reimagine the score based on instructions from the composers and the existing lead sheets. The performance, classified as an alt-opera, involved a modern quartet on instrumentalists, four singers, and immersive theatrical design and direction. The event, originally designed to be held in a bar, was performed for a cabaret space, which was a better fit for the nature of our audiences and effected well the German-theater influence from where the original story and play was first devised and performed. The audience totals were at 85-100% capacity over the 4 performances with a maximum of 85 seats in each. A main goal of the project was to create an exceptional and easily accessible new version of the piece's score, and was successful. Another was expansion of our production budget for Production Design, which was made possible through a donation of $2,000 from an individual supporter, which was used reinforce the expenses for these areas of the budget.$2,000$13,571
"Two Remain" - Heggie/Scheer was meant to be our second mainstage production and our spring 2020 performance. This project was to be a significant undertaking for the company and had been a point of fundraising efforts for over a year leading up to the start of rehearsals, before the piece was canceled in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 restrictions on in person events. We had a goal of engaging better with the Jewish communities in the city of Chicago, and were making efforts and progress to fulfill this goal. In mid-february we presented an engagement event at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, IL. Further efforts were in the pipeline when the project was postponed in favor of for development in a future season. No tickets had been sold at this point but grants and funding had been secured for incurred fees that will carry into the future for the rescheduled production, such as Grand Rights and music score rental expenses, as well as some design material expenses. Other expenses incurred were cancellation fees for artists and musicians. Total expenses paid were about half of what was approved for Chicago Fringe Opera's FY20 (IRS 2019) project budget for this production.$1,500$8,594
"The Rosina Project" - a hip-hop re-imagining of the Rossini opera, "The Barber of Seville," was written and conceived by a team of Chicago artists including Concept & Stage Director George Cederquist, Composers & Producer K. F. Jacques, Composers & Producer 'Kechi, Lead Writer Mikey to the P, Choreographic Director Kelsa 'K-Soul' Robinson, Choreographic Director Daniel 'BRAVEMONK' Haywood, and in collaboration with the group BraveSoul Movement. The project was written and devised to be a way to link classical operatic conventions with hip hop music and dance. After a period of success in development performances and previews over a two seasons, a full version of the piece was produced through several festivals and city supported performances in the company's FY20 (Summer 2019). Our goals of expanding the reach of operatic conventions in this new way were successful through performing for diverse communities and audiences via our 5 performances, four being free to the public. Audience numbers were varied, and due to the open air and walk-by nature of the performances attendance totals cannot be exact, but it is estimated that over 500 people viewed the production. No ticket revenue was collected by Chicago Fringe Opera for these performances and all funding came from city and organizational grants.$7,500$7,500
"Arts in the Dark" was a crowd sourcing event, made possible by an invitation to participate in the City of Chicago's Arts in the Dark Parade in celebration Halloween. Chicago Fringe Opera designed and executed a float with live performers and musicians in attendance in an homage to Mozart. One goal of this project was to join musical forces with the Chicago Public Schools' All-City Performing Arts Program and work with students who would also participate. This portion of the event was somewhat stunted because of the Chicago Teachers' Strikes, however in working with our partner organization we were able to host as many student performers as possible and the float had over 25 individuals either on or walking along side in the event. All expenses for this project were matched with the granted funds, and the remainder was put towards marketing the event.$2,500$2,309
