Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We are an oakland-based architecture and real estate development non-profit working to end mass incarceration through place-based solutions that address its root causes: poverty, racism, unequal access to resources, and the criminal justice system itself. Our work counters the traditional adversarial and punitive architecture of justice--courthouses, prisons, and jail--by creating spaces and buildings for restorative justice, community building, and housing for people coming out of incarceration.

At djds we use our innovations in architecture, design, and real estate development to attack the root causes of mass incarceration which we believe to be poverty, racism, lack of access to resources and the criminal justice system itself.

OUR PRIMARY VEHICLE IS THE POP-UP VILLAGE, A SITE ACTIVATION TOOL THAT HARNESS THE POWER OF DESIGN TO CATALYZE THE MAGIC THAT EMERGES WHEN PEOPLE AND PROGRAMS COME TOGETHER IN PUBLIC SPACE. IN 2017 WE DEVELOPED DESIGNED AND BUILT MANY OF THE ASSETS FOR THIS PLACEMAKING TOOL INCLUDING MOBILE SHOPS AND CARTS. WE ENGAGED SEVERAL COMMUNITIES IN THE PLANNING AND DESIGN OF THESE UNITS AND STARTED OUR FIRST POP-UPS.
