Financial Statement Notes

Part XIII

Tax-Exempt Status The Organization is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and exempt from state taxes under state charities registration laws. Accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America require management to evaluate tax positions taken by the Organization and recognize a tax liability (or asset) if the Organization has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by applicable taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the Organization and has concluded that as of December 31, 2020 there are no uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability (or asset) or disclosure in the financial statements. There have been no tax related interest or penalties for the period presented in these financial statements. Should any such penalties and interest be incurred, the Organization's policy would be to recognize them as a management and general expense.

IRS990/Desc0Preventing Pandemics at the Source: In 2020, Dalberg Catalyst designed and stood up an initiative focused on preventing pandemics at the point of spillover, in partnership with a growing Coalition of actors in the health and environment sectors (including Rainforest Alliance, Eco Health Alliance; Harvard's Center for Climate, Health, and the Global Environment; Harvard's Global Health Institute; Health In Harmony; Pivot; Right to Health Action; Conservation International; The Nature Conservancy, Wildlife Conservation Society; World Resources Institute; and World Wildlife Fund). This initiative includes a three-pronged strategy: a Prevention at the Source' Policy Taskforce that would develop and recommend policies to help prevent the spillover of new disease, and, critically, advocate for adoption of these policies globally and in high-risk countries; a Global Action Fund for Pandemic Prevention to steward this cause and drive on-the-ground prevention efforts long after COVID-19 has passed; and a Global Awareness Campaign to create public recognition of the importance and feasibility of pandemic prevention at the source. This package of interventions will help to create the momentum for a new, more expansive perspective on public health - one that gets to the root of zoonotic diseases before they turn into outbreaks.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Our goal is to take on urgent problems that have massive implications for our collective future, and to anticipate and get ahead of emerging problems that are taking shape. Our work is concentrated within five focus areas: climate change & the environment, global health, food systems, jobs & livelihoods, and freedom & dignity. We deliver impact by serving as a thought partner, designer, coalition-builder, implementer and, in certain instances, fiscal sponsor of social impact initiatives that further our mission and values. In all our work, we guide program delivery to meet the intended objectives by actively managing the activities of the various implementing partners, building in feedback loops and accountability mechanisms, and capturing learnings.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Climate Smart Forest Economy Program: In partnership with the Good Energies Foundation, we are catalyzing investment and support for a forest economy based on the fact that the sustainable usage of forest products could drive 2-3x the climate benefit of forests alone. A forest economy both increases forest cover and creates demand for forests - naturally shifting the role of the private sector from an exploiter of the forest to its protector. The Forest Economies Platform seeks to work with partners to increase the sourcing of sustainable forest products, to promote sustainable management of forests, and to expand forest cover. Implementing partners include World Resources Institute (WRI), Climate-KIC, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the World Economic Forum (WEF).

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0COVAX - Country Readiness & Delivery: With the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we are working with the Dalberg Group and JSI to improve and harmonize knowledge management, communications, and tools and processes used at the global, regional, and country levels for the planning, implementation, and monitoring of COVID-19 vaccine programs. This work will facilitate collaboration, information exchange, and learning between country, region, and immunization partners and increase the readiness and capacity of COVAX participating countries, particularly LMICs, for the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccines' delivery plans. Safe Hands - Fighting COVID-19: Safe Hands Kenya is a mission-driven alliance of Kenyan companies and community based organizations that came together in response to the COVID-19 crisis to deploy free soap, hand-washing stations, face-masks and public disinfection services to Kenya's most vulnerable populations as a first line of defense against COVID-19. In its first few weeks of operation, Safe Hands Kenya recruited nearly 30 organizations across the value chain and field-tested various interventions to determine how best to serve at-risk populations. The companies that joined the Coalition all agreed to provide services rapidly, at zero margin, and prioritizing at-risk communities and hard-to-reach areas. Safe Hands Kenya's behavior change campaign, #TibaNiSisi (Kiswahili for "We are the Cure"), has become Kenya's most visible COVID-19 public awareness campaign, reaching over 3 million Kenyans with critical public safety messages. Over the course of four months, Safe Hands Kenya distributed 500,000 locally manufactured masks and 123 tons of locally produced soap, installed 1,750 handwashing stations in at-risk communities, and created 550 jobs for local youth. By advocating for regular hand washing with soap, we sought to create public health benefits that will pay dividends long after COVID-19. Safe Hands Kenya has been recognized by Fast Company's 2020 Innovation by Design Awards, winning honorable mentions in three categories: Social Good, Cities, and Europe / Middle East / Africa. More information about the impact of Safe Hands Kenya, and our learnings on creating a multi-stakeholder coalition for crisis response, can be found in the Safe Hands Kenya Learning Report. The work in Kenya inspired similar efforts in Tanzania ("Mikono Safi Na Salama,"Clean & Safe Hands" in Swahili) and Ethiopia ("Tenachin Bejachin" / Safe Hands Ethiopia). Dalberg Catalyst acted as the backbone and host for the Coalition. We also supported the implementation of Safe Hands Ethiopia and Safe Hands Tanzania.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Tax-Exempt Status The Organization is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and exempt from state taxes under state charities registration laws.
