Best chance helps men and women leaving prison transition to rewarding lives in the community. We work to reduce recidivism by encouraging meaningful employment and the ability to cope with the stress of "life on the outside."

PEER SUPPORT FOR FORMERLY INCARCERATED MEN: IN 2022 PEER SUPPORT WORKERS, WELL-TRAINED, FORMERLY INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE EXHIBITED STRONG RECOVERIES AND SELF-AWARENESS, HELPED 430 RECENTLY RELEASED MEN AND WOMEN TRANSITION TO PRODUCTIVE LIVES "ON THE OUTSIDE". THE PEER SUPPORT WORKERS PROVIDE CASE MANAGEMENT, HELP EACH PARTICIPANT GAIN AND MAINTAIN EMPLOYMENT, AND HELP FIND HOUSING FOR PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS. WE ALSO MAKE REFERRALS TO BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROVIDERS FOR THOSE EXPERIENCING SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS, AND DISTRIBUTE THE MATERIAL SUPPORT WE GIVE TO EACH CLIENT. AMONG OUR PEER SUPPORT WORKERS SKILLS ARE THE ABILITY TO FACILITATE SUPPORT GROUPS, AS WELL AS RESPOND TO EACH PROGRAM PARTICIPANT'S INDIVIDUAL NEEDS AND PRIORITIES. BECAUSE BEST CHANCE IS A PEER-LED NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION, OUR BUDGET FOR PEER SUPPORT WORKERS IS A MAJOR PART OF THE BEST CHANCE INVESTMENT IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE PROVIDED EACH WITH A BACKPACK, NEW UNDERWEAR, HYGIENE SUPPLIES, NOTEBOOKS, AND IDENTIFICATION EXPENSES (BIRTH CERTIFICATES AND MVD IDS). THEREFORE, WE EXPECTED THOSE CLOSEST TO THE ORGANIZATION TO CONTRIBUTE A DISPROPORTIONATE PERCENTAGE OF THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES NEEDED TO ESTABLISH THE NONPROFIT. WE CONCENTRATED ON STRENGTHENING OUR PROGRAMS WHILE SLOWLY BUILDING OUR BROADER BASE OF SUPPORT. WE WERE RECENTLY GRANTED $60,000 FROM THE NEW MEXICO HUMAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES DIVISION. WE ARE ALSO EXPANDING OUR OTHER SOURCES OF CONTRIBUTED AND EARNED INCOME. THUS, WE WILL FULLY QUALIFY AS A PUBLIC CHARITY DURING CALENDAR YEARS 2022 AND 2023.
