The organization strives to empower individuals during recovery by offering services that encourage connection, access to resources, and self- sufficiency. The organization strives to empower individuals during recovery by offering services that encourage connection, access to resources, and self- sufficiency. The organization believes community members can help one another access services and advocate for changes that better meet their needs.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

In fiscal year 2019 to 2020, strength in peers served 1,077 unduplicated participants of which about one-third were residents of shenandoah and page counties and two-thirds were residents of harrisonburg city and rockingham county. Its substance use and mental health recovery programs served 314 shenandoah and page participants and 229 harrisonburg and rockingham participants. They provide peer support, service navigation, counseling (in-person or via telehealth) and telepsychiatry services to individuals who are homeless, returning from incarceration, or low income and live in rural communities. The organization's community resource center in harrisonburg assisted 347 individuals to navigate community services and resources for housing, employment, transportation, healthcare, and other needs. The jail outreach team provided reentry workshops and peer support to 421 individuals in page county jail, rockingham-harrisonburg regional jail, and middle river regional jail. The street outreach team provided peer support, connections to services and emergency supplies to 68 individuals experiencing homelessness across the organization's service area. The youth program provided individual and group mentoring to 75 school-aged kids in shenandoah county and provided training and technical assistance to shenandoah county public schools and local nonprofit organizations to develop trauma-informed practices to better serve youth who have experienced traumatic events and exhibit emotional and behavioral challenges. The harm reduction program tested 176 individuals for hiv, 91 individuals for hepatitis c, and distributed over 12,000 condoms. It also assisted 10 individuals who tested positive for hepatitis c to connect with treatment. Additionally, the organization expanded the number of peer support groups and workshops it offers and further developed its capacity to help individuals who are at risk for hiv and hepatitis c to learn their status and reduce their risk factors.

The organization is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the organization's tax-exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. The organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. In addition, the organization qualifies for the charitable contribution deduction under section 170(b)(1)(a) and has been classified as an organization other than a private foundation under section 509(a)(2).

ITS SUBSTANCE USE AND MENTAL HEALTH RECOVERY PROGRAMS SERVED 314 SHENANDOAH AND PAGE PARTICIPANTS AND 229 HARRISONBURG AND ROCKINGHAM PARTICIPANTS. THEY PROVIDE PEER SUPPORT, SERVICE NAVIGATION, COUNSELING (IN-PERSON OR VIA TELEHEALTH) AND TELEPSYCHIATRY SERVICES TO INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE HOMELESS, RETURNING FROM INCARCERATION, OR LOW INCOME AND LIVE IN RURAL COMMUNITIES. THE ORGANIZATION'S COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER IN HARRISONBURG ASSISTED 347 INDIVIDUALS TO NAVIGATE COMMUNITY SERVICES AND RESOURCES FOR HOUSING, EMPLOYMENT, TRANSPORTATION, HEALTHCARE, AND OTHER NEEDS. THE JAIL OUTREACH TEAM PROVIDED REENTRY WORKSHOPS AND PEER SUPPORT TO 421 INDIVIDUALS IN PAGE COUNTY JAIL, ROCKINGHAM-HARRISONBURG REGIONAL JAIL, AND MIDDLE RIVER REGIONAL JAIL. THE STREET OUTREACH TEAM PROVIDED PEER SUPPORT, CONNECTIONS TO SERVICES AND EMERGENCY SUPPLIES TO 68 INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS ACROSS THE ORGANIZATION'S SERVICE AREA. THE YOUTH PROGRAM PROVIDED INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP MENTORING TO 75 SCHOOL-AGED KIDS IN SHENANDOAH COUNTY AND PROVIDED TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO SHENANDOAH COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO DEVELOP TRAUMA-INFORMED PRACTICES TO BETTER SERVE YOUTH WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMATIC EVENTS AND EXHIBIT EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL CHALLENGES. THE HARM REDUCTION PROGRAM TESTED 176 INDIVIDUALS FOR HIV, 91 INDIVIDUALS FOR HEPATITIS C, AND DISTRIBUTED OVER 12,000 CONDOMS. IT ALSO ASSISTED 10 INDIVIDUALS WHO TESTED POSITIVE FOR HEPATITIS C TO CONNECT WITH TREATMENT. ADDITIONALLY, THE ORGANIZATION EXPANDED THE NUMBER OF PEER SUPPORT GROUPS AND WORKSHOPS IT OFFERS AND FURTHER DEVELOPED ITS CAPACITY TO HELP INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE AT RISK FOR HIV AND HEPATITIS C TO LEARN THEIR STATUS AND REDUCE THEIR RISK FACTORS.
