Mission and Program Overview

Mission

ABW helps formerly incarcerated individuals living in Washtenaw County to build stable, successful, and fulfilling lives. We support these returned citizens by forging strong relationships with our mentoring teams, community resources, and committed advocates. The benefits are a richer community, reduced recidivism, and increased public safety.

ABW helps formerly incarcerated people make a successful return to society. Our primary activities to achieve this are mentoring programs, advocacy, and direct support for basic needs.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Mentoring Programs. These include one-to-one mentoring, group activities, and (during Covid) on-line programs. We run programs to train new volunteers to serve as mentors. We also are active reaching out to state authorities for help in reaching people whose release is pending so that they can join our program. During 2020, approximately 12-to-15 people received mentoring. Approximately 5-to-10 people were trained as mentors. During 2020 we supported a program with UM PCAP and others called Living on LOP which was an on-line video series about adjusting to life back in society.$15,000$15,000
When required we provide funding to meet the basic needs of clients who are active in our programs. These basic needs could include food (grocery store cards, housing (rent support), and transportation (bus passes). We will also work with clients on fees for document needs like drivers license, birth certificate, rental applications, etc.$15,000$15,000
Advocacy, Education and Awareness. Our Advocacy efforts include working with state and local government officials to try and make the transition from prison to society as successful as possible. We advocate for contact with prisoners whose release is pending. We will advocate individually with landlords. We encourage and educate local authorities on the challenges presented by discriminatory housing practices. We ran programs in 2020 to educate our community and raise awareness of the pressures and challenges faced by returning citizens.
