Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Indigenous-led non-profit committed to promoting ancestral knowledge and practices for the protection and revitalization of the the waters, culture, life, and sacred sites of the Salish Sea.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Public education through events: we have organized, hosted, and/or supported with services a number of in-person and virtual events pertaining to salmon, killer whales, Sk'aliChe'lh-tenaut, the Salish Sea, and sacred lands. Events have included, for example: Netse Mot for Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut, Earth Day Honoring, Water Ceremony for Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut by her tank. We funded Se'Si'Le to produce the international Salmon Seas Symposium, now on schedule to take place in person in October 2022.$40,000$44,000
The Campaign to bring Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut home. We are working to bring the captive killer whale Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut (Tokitae/Lolita) back home to the Salish Sea. According to ancestral teachings, she is a family member of the Lhaq'temish people of Lummi Nation. Bringing her home will help make her killer whale and human families whole again. This Campaign has garnered a lot of public support. We collaborate with a number of individuals and organizations, including Earth Law Center and Friends of Lolita. We commissioned the Whale Sanctuary Project to draft a plan that would safely and responsibly bring her home, and also to conduct a search for a potential site for Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut's Xwlemi Tokw (Lummi Home), a seapen in the Salish Sea. We solicited Proclamation for August 8, 2021 to be recognized as Netse Mot for Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut Day from Lummi Nation; a number of Indigenous leaders and organizations signed onto a worldwide Indigenous Statement of Solidarity; a number of elected officials and heads of non-profit organizations signed onto our Call to Bring Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut Home. Individuals continue to sign the Earth Law Center petition supporting our work. Unlike a number of animal rights and animal welfare activists who have long been calling for her release, we emphasize the family relationship between the Southern Resident Killer whales and the Lhaq'temish people and family reunification; the principles of informed, prior and free consent as it pertains to Indigenous peoples; the importance of heeding Indigenous calls and considering Indigenous values and worldview; the importance of bring science and ceremony together in conservation strategies.$9,500$19,500
Public education through Film and Media. We garner wide coverage of our projects and issues, all of which advocate for the protection of the life, waters, sacred sites, Treaty rights, and/or culture of the Salish Sea. In 2021, the New York Times featured Raynell and Ellie in their "Salmon People" story. Our own was article published in Grist Magazine, and other journalists have featured our involvement with Sk aliCh elh-tenaut for Morning in America (tv), Channel 10 ABC affiliate in Miami, Seattle Met Magazine, Seattle Times, Bellingham Herald, Miami newspapers, The Guardian, Vice news, Atmos, Indian Country Today, King 5 TV news, and many others. There are a number of film projects who are in correspondence with us, and one in active production (closing in on post-production). Resident Orca is a feature-length documentary film produced by Everyday Films and Urban Jungle Film. We are working with them exclusively to tell the story of Squil-le-he-le and Tah-Mahs' connection to and work for Sk aliCh elh-tenaut.$0$2,000
Advocacy and consulting: We have submitted testimony and/or letters of support for the Salmon/Orca Summit hosted by Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, Roberts Bank Terminal 2 (official comment letter), the Lower Snake River Dams Draft report (we support breaching immediately).$0$2,000
Ceremony and culture. We work to protect Lhaq'temish spirit, culture and Schelangen (traditional life ways) in the Salish Sea. Ceremonies pertaining to qwe'lhol'mechen (killer whales) and water are held as needed. All of our work, whether it's advocacy or working with scientific plans, is rooted in Lhaq'temish culture, values, and worldview.$0$2,000
Public education through a podcast entitled 'Sacred Sea'. The podcast explores ways in which Indigenous and indigenized stewardship of the Salish Sea could benefit the future. Tribal leaders, scientists, artists, and others working to for a sustainable future of these lands and waters will be interviewed. Ancestral knowledge as shared in traditional songs and stories are featured. It has been a steep learning curve in how to produce, record, and edit a podcast. We now have those skills and an outline for a first season. Jim Gates, senior podcast producer at NPR Seattle affiliate KUOW was very helpful in mentoring us in 2021. We will send a rough draft of the first season to him for further input, and, potentially, co-production. Jared Tate, an acclaimed classical Chickasaw composer, agreed to compose original theme music for us. Outlined episodes are about Treaty rights, killer whales, salmon, reef netting, and Sk aliCh elh-tenaut.$0$0
Public education through the written word: We regularly send out newsletters to our donors, and post news from verifiable sources pertaining to Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut and/or salmon, sacred sites, the Salish Sea, etc. In 2021 we began conversation with the Mountaineers non-profit organization to produce articles and blog posts about land acknowledgments, Treaty rights, place names, and the like.$0$0

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0There have been changes in Organizational leadership over the past couple years. During such transitions, the responsibility for ensuring timely Form 990-N filing was overlooked. Upon joining the Organization as Secretary/Treasurer, one of Julie Trimingham's first acts of duty was to ensure the Organization was caught up with the appropriate Form 990 filings. When Julie learned that the existing CPA had not filed the prior year Form 990-N or an extension for the 12/31/21 Form 990-EZ, she quickly found a new CPA who specializes in working with nonprofits to help us ensure timely filing going forward. Unfortunately, the Organization's IRS exempt status had already been revoked. The Organization's current leadership is dedicated to ensuring compliance and timely filing going forward and are confident it now has the appropriate structure in place to do so. Please note that this return was originally filed on October 18, 2022 by mailing to the IRS at "Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Ogden, UT 84201-0027" as per the instructions under "Revenue Procedure 2014-11, Streamlined Retroactive Reinstatement". The Organization received notice that the IRS had restored its tax-exempt status on October 27, 2022. The Organization received a separate notice from another IRS department dated December 2022, stating that the return must be e-filed to be accepted. As such, this e-filed version of the 2021 Form 990 serves to address this notice.
