Mission

We are a local grassroots organization with over 100 dedicated volunteers. We are a mobile soup kitchen delivering hot homemade soup, bread, and survival supplies to the homeless in downtown Berkeley.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Grocery Delivery Program -With the onset of the pandemic and the lock-down, many unhoused people lost access to their normal supplies of food and water. The restaurants were shut so nobody was giving their leftovers or a take-out to the people on the street. Water fountains were shut down for public health reasons. Life on the streets, which was already very harsh, became much worse during the pandemic. In response to this increased and urgent need, CTH! started a new program, Consider The Homeless! Still CARES, and started distributing grocery bags of food that required no cooking or preparation and most importantly included bottled water. A new team of volunteers was assembled to create food orders, make regular shopping trips to CostCo, and other discount grocery outlets, and assemble the bags on the morning of the lunchtime delivery every Monday and Friday. Over time, the demand increased, and volunteers streamlined the food distribution system. CTH! is now serving up to 150 grocery bags twice a week.$74,404-
Soup Delivery Program -A roster of volunteer home cooks make up to nine gallons of soup every Thursday and Sunday for delivery on the streets that night. One of the CTH! vans leaves with a volunteer driver and co-pilot with the soup in insulated containers and drives around on a designated route offering a cup of hot soup with bread to anyone who needs it. Most of the ingredients for the soup are donated by the volunteer cooks. CTH! provides the cups, spoons, paper napkins, candy, and survival supplies such as socks, shoes, jeans, hoodies etc.. Most of the clothing is donated or bought at thrift stores. CTH! also pays for the gas, insurance, registration, and maintenance for the van. On an average night CTH! serves 100 homeless men and women.$23,506-
Advocacy and Community Outreach -In the course of food deliveries, upon request or obvious needs, CTH provides an information and referral service which puts people in touch with available services for health, safety, housing, etc. These communications facilitate and generally promote a sense of identity and community, which encourages working towards solutions. These are personal, respectful, non-political conversations. CTH! also advocates for homeless welfare programs and affordable housing programs at City Council meetings and other appropriate venues and closely monitors state and local policies regarding the unhoused population.--
