“Project bioeyes is a hand-on week-long biology unit that uses live zebrafish and allows students to assume the role of "junior scientists." the program is facilitated by an outreach educator from the university of pennsylvania. The educator will make three visits to our school, as well as provide professional development sessions to designated teachers. Over the course of the experiment, students observe zebrafish behavior and follow the development of resulting embryos. Each day, just like research scientists in the laboratory, students hypothesize the test ideas, ask questions, record findings, and think critcally about the impact scientific research has on our community. Students will consider the importance of habitat, the role of dna, and the role of scientific careers. Studetns cross (mate) zebrafish to obtain embryos, and they will observe these embroys throughout the week. Zebrafish are particularly unique as the share 70% of their genes with humans. Students will raise these fish throughout the week and receive scientific inquiry journals to record their data. Participating teachers are invited to attend a professional development session after school at the university of pennsylvannia.”
“Let it grow is a cross curricular unit with science and language arts that incorporates aerogardens and a culminating hands on experience to fernbrook farms enviromnental education center. Student's will be responsible for the care of each of the 4 aerogardens (one in each academic classroom) and connections will be made throughout the year in both science and language arts to the aerogardens and the trip to the farm. Students will use the aerogardens and fernbrook farm trip to complete hands on and writing activities in both secince and language arts. After this project is complete, the aerogardens can be used year after year in the classrooms to continue the lessons.”
“Learning computer science is just as important as learning about the systems of the body. Because of the rise in coding websites like scratch and code.org, students are able to learn the basics. This project will expand ims students' knowledge of coding and indroduce themn to the robotics envoironment. With the use of ozobots and sphero, our 1st through 4th graders will compete in the ims robotics olympics using various technologies and programming concepts to makie small hand-held robots complete desired tasks.”
