Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Equality charter school opened its doors in the fall of 2009 in the north bronx with a college preparatory academic program and a highly structured and supportive school culture. While the school is comprised of students from many backgrounds, it is uniquely designed to close the achievement gap in middle school and prepare students to be successful in college by focusing on the integration of goal setting, critical thinking and problem solving skills. The school's primary purpose is to provide educational services to the six through twelve grade students of community school district 11. Equality charter school was founded in 2009 to serve middle school students in co-op city, a high needs area in the bronx. We currently instruct 234 6-8th grade scholars mostly from bronx community school district 11, but also from manhattan and brooklyn. In august 2014, we began operating classes for students in the ninth grade.

Equality charter school provides a high level of academic rigor in a nurturing learning community that helps prepare scholars to be successful post high school graduation. We realize high expectations for staff and scholars by focusing on the integration of goal setting, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As our scholars move through this progression, they develop into equality men and women: high school graduates who are college-ready and on a trajectory to lead productive lives, in the workplace and the community.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The school follows the accounting standard for uncertainty in income taxes. The standard prescribes a minimum recognition threshold and measurement methodology that a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return is required to meet before being recognized in the financial statements. It also provides guidance for derecognition, classification, interest and penalties, disclosure and transition. The school files informational returns in the federal and new york state jurisdictions. With few exceptions, the school is no longer subject to federal, state, or local income tax examinations for fiscal years before 2012. The school believes that it has appropriate support for the positions taken on its tax returns. Nonetheless, the amounts ultimately paid, if any, upon resolution of the issues raised by the taxing authorities may differ materially from the amounts accrued for each year. Management believes that its nonprofit status would be sustained upon examination. Should there be interest on underpayments of income tax, the school would classify it as interest expense. The school would classify penalties in connection with underpayments of tax as other expense.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE SCHOOL FOLLOWS THE ACCOUNTING STANDARD FOR UNCERTAINTY IN INCOME TAXES.
