Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 4

The organization made changes to its governing documents including updating the mission to reflect the current focus of the organization and updating the number of Board Members to no more than seven, and no less than five.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

The Board of Directors receives a copy of the tax return and any questions regarding the return are directed to the CPA who prepares the return. All questions are answered prior to filing Form 990.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The conflict of interest policy is provided to all board members annually. The board members are required to complete and sign the form annually. The conflict of interest form asks the board members to list all of their relevant organizational and personal affiliations. The board then discusses whether different situations give rise to the level of creating a conflict of interest which would require recusal of board members from discussions or decisions as per the conflict of interest policy.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The executive director's compensation is reviewed and adjusted by the Board of Directors. Before determining any salary adjustment the board considers experience with the organization, background and other professional experience. The board also utilized salary surveys to obtain the median salaries for education nonprofit executive directors in the area and nationally and reviewed various other nonprofit organization's compensation via various websites available.

IRS990/Desc0PreK1. MSF has partnered with MDE to support the implementation of the new preK law. We have been able to provide multiple resources and hosted one collaborative meeting in order to facilitate a professional learning community among the approved collaboratives and to broaden our understanding of what works in the preK collaborative model.2. MSF partnered with the Committee for Economic Development to provide resources on the 1:1 state tax credit included in the bill to incentivize business/community support of preK collaboratives. The resources were presented at the Mississippi Economic Council's annual meeting in February.3. MSF partnered with Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) to host a legislative reception that focused on early education in Mississippi. 4. MSF worked with MPB to create a short video highlighting the importance of supporting state-funded preK in Mississippi. 5. MSF published the "State of Public PreK Report (2011-2012)".Charter Schools6. Mississippi First met with different legislators to educate them about what charter schools are and what they will mean for the Mississippi education system.7. MSF serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Mississippi Charter Schools Association (MCSA), which supports charter school applicants as well as approved charter schools. MCSA recently received its 501c3 status and is preparing to spin off. 8. MSF successfully lobbied for two small changes to the charter school law. 9. MSF published "Keeping the Promise: Strengthening Mississippi's Charter Schools Act of 2013."Common Core10. Mississippi First provides CCSS resources and advocacy tools for members of the public to take action and support the implementation of the CCSS in Mississippi.11. MSF launched the Choose Excellence social media campaign. Followers receive regular information pertaining to the standards and their implementation. We also use paid advertising to promote a series of pro-Common Core ads geared towards parents.12. We distributed 6 e-newsletters to Common Core supporters.13. We spearheaded a letter-writing campaign around support for the Common Core State Standards.14. We worked with college interns from Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi, Tougaloo, and Millsaps to garner support for the standards from college students. 15. We hosted a rally in the fall of 2015, and a capitol day in the spring of 2016 to show support for CCSS.16. We established the Educator Leadership Council in order to build a network of teachers who support the standards.17. We successfully lobbied for the standards to remain the same.Sex Ed18. MSF launched the Mississippi Youth Council (MYCouncil) in partnership with Advocates for Youth. A student council made up of 10 students from around Mississippi, MYCouncil raises awareness among youth about the need for STI and pregnancy prevention efforts for themselves and other young people in Mississippi and advocates for comprehensive sex education in Mississippi public schools and other policy priorities.19. MSF completed a survey/scan of publicly-funded health centers in Creating Healthy and Responsible Teens (CHART) communities.20. We established a Youth Advisory Council for youth-friendly services.21. MSF implemented a youth-friendly training-of-trainers.22. We gained 5 new CHART school districts.23. The Governor made changes to his Teen Pregnancy Prevention Proclamation based on recommendations of MYCouncil.24. We hired a new Teen Health Training Coordinator.
