Activity 2

The Abroad program takes students and teachers to developing countries where the groups work in projects of community based organizations. This gives them the opportunity to meet with people who are taking social action and shape their environment, learn first-hand about development issues - HIV/ AIDS, education, poverty - and meet peers and experience daily life in these countries up close. Upon return the students develop an action plan to share their experience with their school communities, raise awareness about an issue they learned about, and raise funds for the projects they visited. We currently travel to Zambia, Paraguay and Jamaica. During the fiscal year ending 2012, 49 students and teachers from 19 schools traveled to Zambia, Paraguay and Jamaica, and developed 16 action plans between them. 60% of participants received financial aid for the trip costs.

Activity 3

The Fellows program is an after-school program in which high school students learn how to develop a business plan, meet with social entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations, and develop their own social action project, or ventures, for which they can obtain seed funding. For the fiscal year ended 2012, 53 students from 30 partner schools graduated from the Fellows program in May 2012. The students pitched 45 ventures to expert panels.
