| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Education, Support and Advocacy: NAMI Tulare County education programs offer knowledge and training for persons with mental illness and their family members. These programs provide peer led education and support service to members and the general public including relevant information, valuable insight and the opportunity to engage in support networks. The programs draw on the lived experience of people with mental illnesses (consumers) and their family members who have learned to live with their illnesses and have had special training of how to help others affected by mental illness.NAMI Connections is a recovery support group for adults with mental illness regardless of their diagnosis. Every group is offered free of charge and meets weekly for 90 minutes. The meetings are led by trained individuals who are also in recovery; people who understand the challenge we face.Family to Family is a free, 12 week course for families, partners and friends of individuals with serious mental illnesses taught by trained NAMI Tulare County family members and caregivers of individuals living with mental illnesses. The course dwells on the emotional responses families have to the trauma of mental illness and the nuts and bolts of how to navigate their new life affected by mental illness. Many family members describe their experience in the program as life-changing. This program is presented in Porterville and Visalia California.Peer to Peer is a free, 10 week , peer led, recovery education course open to any person with a serious mental illness. Peer to Peer emphasizes recovery from mental illness as feasible, supportable goal and challenges the stigma often wrongly associated with mental illness. Parents and Teachers as Allies is a panel of a consumer who became ill as a child, a parent who had a child diagnosed with a mental illness when a minor, retired school teacher or administrator and a registered nurse give a presentation providing a summary of mental illness in children and adolescent as well as a discussion of the issues these disorders raise for parents and teachers. It is intended to provide an educational tool for advancing mutual understanding and communication between parents and teachers.Walk with NAMI Tulare County is an event to promote awareness of services available from NAMI Tulare County and to reduce stigma of mental illness to encourage the mentally ill to seek treatment. Funds raised are used to provide advocacy, support and education to family members, friends and consumers with mental illness.Crisis Intervention Team Training is a forty hour class for police enforcement officers, police dispatchers, and correctional officers in Tulare County. NAMI Tulare County participates by providing people for role playing as consumers in crisis and presenting a panel of consumers and their family members whose lives have been affected by mental illness as well as law enforcement and/or the criminal justice system. A NAMI Tulare County member coordinates the NAMI presentation and acts as an evaluator of the program.The Monthly Newsletter informs members of the organizations actions and notices of upcoming events that are of interest to members and other public citizens of the community. It also updates members and the public of appropriate scientific finding affecting people affected by mental illness.Support Groups in Porterville and Visalia are free, monthly meetings of family members and friends of consumers as well as individuals with mental illness where participants can talk frankly about their challenges and help one another through their learned wisdom. These meetings are facilitated by trained NAMI members and participants are encouraged to share actively in the work of the group. |

Consumer Holiday Outreach Sack Program places purchased and donated items including oranges in holiday sacks and distributes them to 250 low income people with mental illness in Tulare County. The sacks are filled and distributed by NAMI Tulare County member volunteers. Many consumers eagerly await this holiday event and welcome the volunteers with open arms. Monthly NAMI Tulare County General Meetings are held to inform the public and members of the pertinent events and actions in the community, state and nation that may concern individuals with mental illness and their families. At regular intervals, educational speakers with knowledge about different aspects of mental illness are invited to inform the public and our membership about areas of interest. The Tulare County Valentine's Day Dance is a social event for individuals with mental illness and their families sponsored by NAMI Tulare County and the Tulare County Mental Health Department. This event promotes interaction of consumers, family members, and professional providers in a setting that is not clinical in nature. It increases social skills and gives a "sense of community" to all who participate.Ending the Silence is a 50-minute program designed for high school audiences and is typically presented in the freshman/sophomore health classes during the mental health portion of the curriculum. This transformational program is devoted to giving students an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative PowerPoint, short videos, and personal testimony. Through the presentation, students learn symptoms and indicators of mental illness, and are given ideas about how to help themselves, friends, or family members who may be in need of support.The program is delivered by a trained two-person team, including an individual who relates to the student population by sharing their own journey with a diagnosable mental health condition. A primary goal of this program is to create a generation of students that are well-positioned to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness through education and advocacy.This two-hour in-service program focuses on helping school professionals, ( teachers, administrators, school health professionals and others that work with children), as well as families within the school community better understand the early warning signs of mental illnesses in children and adolescents and how best to intervene so that youth with mental health treatment needs are linked with services. It also covers the lived experience of mental illnesses and how schools can best communicate with families about mental health related concerns. This program is based on NAMIs highly successful Parents and Teachers as Allies (P&TA) publication.NAMI Tulare County participates in community health fairs and events throughout Tulare County providing information about mental illnesses and promotong wellness and recovery. |
