“Our International Exchange programming changed significantly. This fiscal year marked the end of the American Arts Incubator program and associated funding from the U.S. State Department. We completed the final virtual exchange and held an online alumni Amplify gathering to close out the program. In its place, we began contracting directly with U.S. embassies abroad and foreign cultural agencies to implement bilateral virtual exchanges. We intend to continue seeking funding from these sources for future virtual, hybrid, and in-person exchanges.Our Public Art program continued with a focus on a single annual project. This year that project was Marble and Media: Digital Activations of Public Memory, an augmented reality response to the contemporary discourse around monuments.Our Arts Education program took a new direction this year with the launch of the Grand Creative Resource Library, a lending library for electronic synthesizers and audio production equipment hosted by ZERO1 in partnership with Gray Area and Crowbar Corner.”

International ExchangeAmerican Arts Incubator Austria American Arts Incubator (AAI) was an initiative of the U.S. Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) developed in partnership with ZERO1. Through AAI, U.S. artists collaborated with communities abroad during a month-long incubator. These creative collaborations transferred skills in art, technology, and entrepreneurship. Through digital and new media art workshops, they facilitated dialogue and explorations of the social challenge. Participants prototyped creative projects applying workshop skills to the challenge. Each exchange culminated in an open house that showcased the prototypes and solicited public feedback.The final exchange in the six-year program was AAI Austria, produced in partnership with U.S. Embassy Vienna and Ars Electronica. Due to the onset of COVID-19, AAI Austria was transitioned to a fully virtual engagement. AAI Austria engaged a total of 57 participants, including 18 workshop participants plus attendees to public events, such as artist talks, panel reviews, and final exhibitions of program outputs.Creative Impact Lab CairoCreative Impact Lab Cairo (CIL Cairo) was a five-week online creative exchange that utilized community-driven digital and new media art projects to address womens empowerment. Lead artist Katherine Behar led five workshops balancing the teaching of new technical, creative, and entrepreneurial skills. There were 20 participants in CIL Cairo, composed of both men and women between ages 22-37 who were based in Egypt (specifically Cairo, Giza, and Alexandria). We held a public talk for the U.S. lead artist at the beginning of the exchange as well as a public exhibition showcase on Zoom, which was livestreamed on social media. These events had a total of 101 attendees on Zoom and 799 views on Facebook, as well as 81 post engagements (comments, likes, shares). The exchange culminated in a virtual exhibition titled Recto & Verso, which showcases participant projects addressing womens empowerment.Sin ViolenciasSin Violencias was a week-long creative exchange and laboratory exploring visual art, new media, and activism centered on gender-based violence taking place online between November 25 and December 2, 2020, aligning with the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.Sin Violencias explored new methodologies in storytelling and emerging media that could be deployed in campaigns to end gender-based violence. The exchange involved 5 workshops and culminated in a public online event that included a panel about the future of art and activism, and a presentation of project ideas that emerged during the Lab with 23 attendees on Zoom.The goals of the Lab were to facilitate mutual understanding and creative collaboration between U.S. artists and Colombian artists and activists in Bogota. The exchange involved 1 American artist, 9 Colombian artists, and 3 guest speakers.2. Public ArtTransgenesisTransgenesis was a short film that brought together artists based in the Bay Area, and QTPOC arts communities as collaborators to collectively re-imagine our relationship to the environment, our bodies, and health. This project was originally intended to be site-specific in nature. The initial plan was to explore the transformation of toxic environments through durational performances and mixed media installation works that reveal present and future narratives of symbiosis, bioremediation, and healing at Herons Head Park and the historic site of the former Hunters Point PG&E Power Plant, which for many years was powered by the burning of coal and fossil fuels, causing a large amount of pollution in the area.However, due to COVID-19 the project was postponed and transformed into a short film, touching on the same themes outlined above. This fiscal year marked the end of the American Arts Incubator program and associated funding from the U.S. State Department. We completed the final virtual exchange and held an online alumni Amplify gathering to close out the program. In its place, we began contracting directly with U.S. embassies abroad and foreign cultural agencies to implement bilateral virtual exchanges. We intend to continue seeking funding from these sources for future virtual, hybrid, and in-person exchanges.Our Public Art program continued with a focus on a single annual project. This year that project was Marble and Media: Digital Activations of Public Memory, an augmented reality response to the contemporary discourse around monuments.Our Arts Education program took a new direction this year with the launch of the Grand Creative Resource Library, a lending library for electronic synthesizers and audio production equipment hosted by ZERO1 in partnership with Gray Area and Crowbar Corner. |
