Mission

NAMI Monterey County offers hope and reduction of stigma associated with mental illness through education, advocacy, service access, and support for families and their loved ones living with mental illness. To this end, we seek to enhance the quality and fulfillment of their lives through wellness and recovery.

Community outreach and advocacy, education courses Peer to Peer (English/Spanish), Family to Family (English/Spanish), Provider Education, support groups, reduction of stigma, support for families with education on resources, volunteer training.

Form 990, Part XII, Line 1

The Organization made a change in their accounting method from cash to accrual during the year end August 31, 2017. This change was implemented to fulfill a requirement to have their financial statements audited in accordance to GAAP. This will continue to be a requirement for the Organization. This change resulted in a prior period adjustment to beginning net assets of $26,891 - see Form 990, Part XI, Line 8.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

NAMI Monterey County was organized as a California nonprofit organization and is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and a similar provision in the California tax codes. In addition, NAMI Monterey County has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under Section 509(a)(2). As such, no part of the net earnings of the Organization may, in whole or in part, benefit from any private shareholder or individual. Income from certain activities not directly related to the Organizations tax exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. During the year ended August 31, 2017 and 2016, NAMI Monterey County had no net unrelated business taxable income.

Conduct two 10-week educational courses for individuals living with mental illness. Conduct two 5-week educational courses (or one-day abbreviated course) for professional care providers who work with individuals living with mental illness. Present educational information at community events, in English and in Spanish, to build awareness of the stigma associated with mental illness. Present to law enforcement groups to educate them on mental illness and how they can work more effectively with affected individuals and their families. Expand outreach into diverse groups focusing on Spanish speaking community, youth and senior citizens. Maintain bilingual phone line support for families of the mentally ill, which handles approximately 500 calls per year. Mail approximately 200 packets of bilingual educational resource material upon request to family members who seek to learn more about mental illness.

In addition, NAMI Monterey County has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under Section 509(a)(2). As such, no part of the net earnings of the Organization may, in whole or in part, benefit from any private shareholder or individual. Income from certain activities not directly related to the Organizations tax exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. During the year ended August 31, 2017 and 2016, NAMI Monterey County had no net unrelated business taxable income.
