“Stem centers of academic excellence (stem-cae)are educational institutions that host the harris foundation programs that will enhance the academic success of youth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through innovative stem-based activities conducted in a variety of locations. The stem-cae seeks to provide students with access to educational opportunities in order to develop knowledge and skills necessary to achieve their goals, cultivate lifelong learning, and to promote respect for diversity in our global economy. Each stem-cae membership level contains a list of programs that institutions/organizations can select to offer. Programs include saturday academies, summer academies, leadership academies, after school programs, stem clubs, field-based programs, academic challenges and competitions, virtual science camps, day camps, as well as professional development training. The stem centers of academic excellence program includes, but are not limited to: 1)bernard harris summer science camp is a 21st century science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (stem) interdisciplinary camp designed to inspire high-achieving mathematics and science middle school students to pursue stem related careers. The camp is based on national standards for stem careers with a theme supported by hand-on activities and field excursions hosted by lamar university where 32 middle school students participated in 2019. 2)girls stem academy - a program designed to engage girls in science,technology, engineering, and mathematics (stem) education during the summer, where 39 elementary students and 7 volunteers from houston area independent school districts participated. 3) stem after school program - a program designed to provide educational opportunities in secondary schools after school in science, technolog, engineering, and mathematics (stem). 3 uteach volunteers and 38 middle school students participated in the program.”
“1) dare to dream program is a nine-month, elementary school based program that boosts self-esteem in children by providing access to positive role models. Dare to dream uses interactive math and science curriculums to get students thinking about their futures and exploring the exciting possiblities. The interactive curriculum is comprised of three (3) modules which focus on self-improvement, community service, and goal setting/career planning. Ten (10) elementary schools from two (2) houston area independent school districts participated in the dare to dream program, representing over 250 elementary students, 10 volunteer probation officers, 11 fbi special agents, and 10 community in schools volunteers. 2)the dream tour is a motivational series that encourages middle school students to both find and achieve their potential by encouraging them to go to college and study science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as a way to fulfill their dreams. The dream tour encourages communities to demand access to strong science and mathematics programs in their schools. 3)the harris scholars scholarship program is designed to award and encourage high-achieving middle school students to continue working to achieve their academic and career goals and dreams. The scholarship has been awarded for more than ten years to the top eighth grades students of the dr. Bernard. A. Harris, jr. Middle school in san antonio, texas.”

THE CAMP IS BASED ON NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR STEM CAREERS WITH A THEME SUPPORTED BY HAND-ON ACTIVITIES AND FIELD EXCURSIONS HOSTED BY LAMAR UNIVERSITY WHERE 32 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN 2019. 2)GIRLS STEM ACADEMY - A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO ENGAGE GIRLS IN SCIENCE,TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) EDUCATION DURING THE SUMMER, WHERE 39 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AND 7 VOLUNTEERS FROM HOUSTON AREA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICTS PARTICIPATED. 3) STEM AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM - A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS AFTER SCHOOL IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOG, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM). 3 UTEACH VOLUNTEERS AND 38 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM. |
