| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | TUTOR POWER HOUR: IF A K-12 GRADE STUDENT REQUIRES ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE IN READING OR MATH, AS DETERMINED BY REPORT CARD GRADES, ACADEMIC INTERACTIONS WITH THE STUDENT SUCH AS DURING HOMEWORK HELP, AND STUDENT/PARENT TUTORING REQUESTS, TRM STAFF MATCHES THAT STUDENT WITH A TRAINED VOLUNTEER TUTOR THAT MEETS WITH THEM ONE-ON-ONE FOR ONE HOUR PER WEEK THROUGH OUR TUTOR POWER HOUR PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES LITERACY TUTORING, READING BUDDIES, AND ONLINE MATH TUTORING. EMBEDDED IN THE PROGRAM IS THE PHILOSOPHY THAT STUDENTS LEARN BY DOING, BY BEING TOTALLY IMMERSED IN THE NEW LEARNING, AND BY SOUNDING OUT LOUD THEIR REACTIONS AND OPINIONS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THEY ARE SUPPORTED BY A VOLUNTEER WHO ENCOURAGES AND CARES ABOUT THEM. IT IS THIS CRITICAL THINKING, CONFIDENCE-BOOSTING PROCESS THAT IS THE STRENGTH OF THE TUTOR POWER HOUR PROGRAM.READING BUDDIES: STUDENTS ARE INTRODUCED TO THE LOVE OF READING AND LEARNING IN OUR READING BUDDIES LITERACY PROGRAM WHICH PAIRS K-3 GRADE STUDENTS WITH TRM'S OLDER 6-12 GRADE BELIEVE & ACHIEVE STUDENT VOLUNTEERS FOR ONE HOUR PER WEEK. STUDENTS AND STUDENT VOLUNTEERS ENGAGE IN PRE-PRIMER LITERACY SESSIONS THAT INFUSE HEIGHTENED SENSORY RECALL AND PROVIDE REAL WORLD KNOWLEDGE ACTIVITIES AND INFLUENTIAL EXPERIENCES THAT EXPAND STUDENT COMPREHENSION SKILLS AND ALLOW YOUNGER STUDENTS TO CONNECT TO LITERACY ON A DEEPER LEVEL. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES AN EXCELLENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY FOR OLDER STUDENTS AND ROLE MODELS FOR YOUNGER STUDENTS.LITERACY TUTORING: TRAINED LITERACY TUTORS PROVIDE 3-12 GRADE STUDENTS WITH A HIGH IMPACT HOUR THAT NOT ONLY FOCUSES ON READING, WRITING, AND COMPREHENSION BUT, ALSO, TEACHES STRATEGIES TO BECOME SELF-SUFFICIENT, SELF-EVALUATING, AND POWERFULLY INDEPENDENT. STUDENTS ARE PUT ON 1 OF 4 CURRICULUM TRACKS, AS DETERMINED BY ASSESSMENTS: EMERGENT-PROGRESSIVE READER (K-2ND), TRANSITIONAL-FLUENT READER (3RD-5TH), COMPREHENSION READER (6TH-8TH), AND COMPREHENSION/COMPOSITION READER (9TH-12TH). CURRICULUM CONSISTS OF FIVE SECTIONS: TUTOR READ ALOUD, VOCABULARY/SIGHT WORDS-DEFINITIONS, VOCABULARY/SIGHT WORDS-SENTENCE STRUCTURE, STUDENT READ ALOUD, AND JOURNALING. TRM'S LITERACY CURRICULUM IS BASED ON FOUNTAS & PINNELL GUIDED READING LEVELS AND PENGUIN BOOKS READING LEVELS STANDARDS. AFTERWARD, EACH STUDENT IS GIVEN AN INDIVIDUAL LITERACY PLAN (ILP) WHICH ALLOWS TUTORS TO TRACK STUDENT READING LEVELS AND GOALS AND OFFERS SUPPORTIVE LITERACY AND SOCIAL STRATEGIES.ONLINE MATH TUTORING: 2-12 GRADE STUDENTS IN NEED OF ONE-ON-ONE MATH ASSISTANCE CAN ENROLL IN TRM'S ONLINE MATH TUTORING PROGRAM THROUGH 1 OF 2 TRACKS ED2NET LEARNING OR REASONING MIND. IN ED2NET LEARNING, STUDENTS AND TUTORS MEET ONLINE FOR ONE HOUR/WEEK, UTILIZING A HEADSET AND ELECTRONIC WRITING PAD THAT ALLOWS THEM TO VIRTUALLY COMMUNICATE AND FOLLOW THE DAY'S CURRICULUM TOGETHER. THE SOFTWARE CURRICULUM ADAPTS LESSONS AND ORDERING FOR EACH STUDENT AND PROVIDES INDIVIDUALLY-TAILORED PRACTICE SHEETS AND ONLINE QUIZZES. SINCE TRM BEGAN PROVIDING ED2NET LEARNING IN 2008, STUDENT MATH SCORES HAVE CONTINUALLY INCREASED AN AVERAGE OF 25% EACH YEAR.REASONING MIND SERVES DISD STUDENTS IN GRADES 2-5 TWO TIMES PER WEEK IN THIS 45 MINUTE COMPUTER-BASED MATH PROGRAM. PROVIDING REAL-TIME TRACKING OF THE STUDENT'S PROGRESS, THE STUDENT STARTS AT HIS/HER GRADE LEVEL AND THE PROGRAM ADJUSTS QUESTIONS BASED ON THE STUDENT'S ANSWERS. RATHER THAN ONLY LEARNING MATH CONCEPTS, STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP THEIR MATH KNOWLEDGE AND THINKING SKILLS, LEARNING HOW TO FIGURE OUT A PROBLEM AND WHY A PROBLEM IS SOLVED A CERTAIN WAY. ACCORDING TO A 2014 STUDY BY DISD, THE MORE HOURS A STUDENT USED REASONING MIND, THE MORE LIKELY THEY WERE TO MEET GRADE-LEVEL STANDARDS ON STANDARDIZED TESTS.2014-2015 OUTCOMES:- 191 STUDENTS RECEIVED LITERACY TUTORING- 121 STUDENTS RECEIVED MATH TUTORING- STUDENTS MET WITH LITERACY OR MATH TUTORS FOR APPROXIMATELY 25 SESSIONS FOR ONE HOUR- 98% OF STUDENTS WERE PROMOTED TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL- 51% OF |

AMERICORPS MEMBERS, STAFF, AND VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE ACADEMIC SUPPORT TO STUDENTS BY ASSISTING WITH HOMEWORK AND PROVIDING TOOLS AND RESOURCES FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS. STUDENTS ARE REWARDED FOR HOMEWORK COMPLETION, ATTENDANCE, AND GOOD BEHAVIOR BY EARNING "TRM BUCKS" WITH BI-ANNUAL EVENTS TO SPEND THEIR "BUCKS" ON SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND TOYS. THIS SYSTEM NOT ONLY SERVES AS A MEASUREMENT OF PROGRESS FOR STUDENTS BUT, ALSO, BEGINS TO TEACH THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY AT A YOUNG AGE. IN 2015-2016, TRM RE-FOCUSED OUR PLAZA ARTS AND CRAFTS ACTIVITIES, WHICH STUDENTS PARTAKE IN AFTER COMPLETING THEIR HOMEWORK, TO STEAM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS, AND MATH) ACTIVITIES. EACH DAY, STUDENTS CAN PARTICIPATE IN A NEW HANDS-ON LESSON THAT INCORPORATES ONE OR MORE STEAM CATEGORIES, SUCH AS TESSELLATIONS DAY, WHICH EXPOSES STUDENTS TO THE CONCEPT AND PROPERTIES OF TESSELLATIONS BY USING THE ARTWORK OF M.C. ESCHER. OUR LONG HOURS GIVE STUDENTS MORE TIME TO COMPLETE THEIR HOMEWORK, CREATE A SPACE FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS TO WORK TOGETHER ON PROJECTS, AND ENSURE THAT STUDENTS LEARN AND PRACTICE GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS. STUDENTS ARE ALSO EXPOSED TO COLLEGE AT AN EARLY AGE THROUGH YEARLY TRIPS TO SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY FOR EASTER AND HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES AND TRM'S "WALL OF HONOR," WHICH SHOWCASES OUR BELIEVE & ACHIEVE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES.OUTCOMES:- 220 STUDENTS SERVED- 98% OF STUDENTS WERE PROMOTED TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL- 92% OF STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN SPECIAL EVENTS/PROJECTS/FIELD TRIPS THAT EXPOSED STUDENTS TO COLLEGE AT AN EARLY AGE- 95% OF STUDENTS REPORTED AN INCREASED POSITIVE ATTITUDE/BELIEFS/PERCEPTIONS OF SELF AND FUTURE- 95% OF 5TH GRADE STUDENTS TRANSITIONED INTO THE BELIEVE & ACHIEVE PROGRAM |
