Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Crafts, and help with music for the children. During 2015 we had one child attend a hosting program with the result that the family decided to adopt the child. Several of our children were successfully placed in a guardianship family within latvia, and several others were able to return home after receiving the guidance and support they needed to turn their lives for the better. We continue to visit and stay in contact with these families in an effort to keep them together. We had three volunteer groups travel to latvia. One team was from germany and they brought boxes of toys and clothing for the children. This group also spent time with children from one of our houses teaching them german and providing individual time and special excursions. A second group travelled from oklahoma to help make repairs at our farm and camp property. They tore down several small cabins that had become termite infested and helped us to refurbish the remaining cabins so that they would last for many more years. A third team focused on giving out staff training in physical therapy. Simple massage techniques were taught to help calm and relax children who are tense and nervous due to family crisis. These simple techniques are now being employed and have been effective, particularly with our younger children. Our staff size remains stable at 30 staff members. We received a small grant that allowed us to use our psychologist more frequently to meet the needs of the children. This helped tremendously as we had two teenagers in residence who had been rescued while attempting suicide and 7 children who had been emotionally and sexually abused. At some point we need to consider a full time psychologist, but this will take additional regular funding. Our employee costs have remained stable this year, but we are looking at an increase effective january 1, 2016. There will be a small rise in the minimum wage in latvia requiring an adjustment in salaries across the board. We will be looking at an average rise in salary of 20 euro, or roughly a 3.5% increase in salaries. We celebrated 18 years of work with children in latvia this year. Though latvia continues to move away from institutionalized care for children, we are one of the centers that has been asked to remain and continue our work past 2020. We plan to continue to work with all our hearts as long as we are needed.

IRS990/Desc0THE WORK OF SPARROWS NEST IN 2015 CONTINUED TO CENTER AROUND THE NEEDS OF ORPHANED AND ABANDONED CHILDREN IN INSTITUTIONALIZED CARE. THIS CARE CONTINUES TO TAKE PLACE LARGELY IN LATVIA AND SECONDARILY IN LITHUANIA, ESTONIA, AND RUSSIA. DURING 2015 WE HAD THOUSANDS OF SERVICE HOURS TO CHILDREN IN RESIDENTIAL CARE IN OUR ORPHANAGE HOMES AND MANY SERVICE HOURS TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN CRISIS. WE ALSO EXPANDED OUR OUTREACH TO ELDERLY AND WITH THE HELP OF DESIGNATED FUNDS WE WERE ABLE TO MAKE SURGERIES, DENTURES, AND MONTHLY BILLS FOR MEDICINE POSSIBLE FOR SENIOR CITIZENS WITHOUT FAMILIES TO CARE FOR THEM. MANY OF THESE SENIOR CITIZENS ALSO VOLUNTEERED TO READ, TEACH CRAFTS, AND HELP WITH MUSIC FOR THE CHILDREN.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0CRAFTS, AND HELP WITH MUSIC FOR THE CHILDREN.
