DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Blue Beaches Program allowed Ocean Blue to clean 50 ocean and river beaches with 1,001 volunteers in Washington Oregon California and Florida. Seven of these clean-up events were hosted by Ocean Blue staff at beaches in all four states four were as part of an emergency response effort to clean debris along Oregon riverbanks following flood events. As part of a new Create a Cleanup Initiative 36 volunteers were trained and empowered to lead their own events with local volunteers. Since our father-and-son founders began this mission Ocean Blue Project volunteers have removed approximately 180,000 pounds of debris from beaches and ocean bound rivers with 82,582 pounds in 2019 alone. Marine microplastic awareness and education was integrated into cleanup activities as a main focus. Single use plastic and microplastics found in marine environments can originate in urban streams and rivers that flow to our one world Ocean. A percent comes from boats and fisheries including ropes buo$0$0
River Restoration Projects Program formerly known as Blue Streams & Rivers Program restores wildlife habitat for native salmonid bird and riparian species living in Pacific Northwest waterways that flow to our one world Ocean. Using a holistic ecosystem appraoch 800 native trees and shrubs were planted along tributaries of Oregon's Willamette River. The overall goal for the program is to plant 1 million trees for streams by 2025. Planti nngative trees and shrubs lowers stream and river water temperature that flow into our one world Ocean helping to reduce Ocean temperatures and further efforts to reduce climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide in the soil. By enhancing wildlife habitat and improving water quality of urban streams and rivers River Restoration Projects increase economic value of local communities. Not only do native plantings improve aestheticis of local water features and contribute to efforts to stop the steady rise in global temperatures the shade provide$0$0
Blue Schools Program is a K-12 ecology-based curriculum that teaches children and young adults to become active environmental stewards of their beaches streams rivers and one world ocean. Through Blue Schools students discover the importance of their local watershed learn about the pollutants that can contaminate local drinking water make a holistic connection between their own environment and the long-term health of the local water supply and wildlife and discover the relationship between their watershed and the ocean. Working together with teachers and staff ensure that we develop learning and Stewardship Action Projects designed to benefit each student school and their greater communities. Lessons can be adapted to either a virtual or in-person setting. The Blue Schools Team works with teachers and administrators to tailor curriculum to meet unique needs of individual classrooms communities and watersheds.
