| SUMMARY: Echo's Season 24 was back to pre-COVID programming with 2 main stage productions, 12 podcast episodes, 12 staged readings, and judging 530(!) script submissions to our Big Shout Out 3 - International New Play Contest for Women+ Playwrights. Audience attendance remained slight in 2022, but for those patrons who happily donned face masks and made the trip to the theater, the payoff was glorious. For theatergoers too uncomfortable to return to the Bath House Cultural Center, we added an online run of the season opener, IN A WORD, and we kept our ECHO OFFSTAGE podcasts streaming to our fans around the world. The ECHO READS free staged reading events were presented twice, once at the Bath House and once at a partner venue elsewhere in Dallas, so audiences were able to choose their location and their experience. Audiences were larger for our fall show, FOUNDERS KEEPERS, and it was clear that they were becoming more secure about returning to public spaces after the pandemic. Echo is thrilled that our productions helped build audience confidence and provide work for our local creatives.IN A WORD: Hailed locally as The smartest script I've ever experienced, IN A WORD by Lauren Yee intrigued audiences with a poetic and empathetic examination of a couple coping with the disappearance of their young son. Echo incorporated magic into the production to heighten the wife's magical thinking. This production ran in March and April and continued an online run after the live run.FOUNDERS KEEPERS: Just in time for Back-to-School, the play which won our Big Shout Out New Play Contest hit the stage in September and October. FOUNDERS KEEPERS by Aurora Behlke dove into a nation on fire and focused on 5, fifth-grade girls tasked with re-writing the US Constitution to craft a better world. This winner was the perfect example of the prevalent themes of our play contest submissions: starting over after a world-wide apocalypse, distrust of government, social unrest, and a fervent hope that the next generation will somehow come up with something better. ECHO OFFSTAGE: Our podcast amplified the voices of 14 Impactful and Diverse Women+ of Theatre discussing the balancing act of making a life offstage while portraying so many lives on-stage and on the reinvention of theater for a post-pandemic world. Guests included local favorites Tina Parker, Denise Lee, and Liz Mikel, and two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage. The Echo Reads series featured 6 brand new scripts which were finalists from our Big Shout Out. Each play reading was done twice: once at the Bath House and once at a partner venue.ECHO READS: tHE staged reading of the Big Shout Out Finalist Honoree script, THOSE HOLLOW BODIES, featured our first all gender-non-conforming cast, narrator, and director. It was humbling to realize the importance of this to the artists and audience alike. The characters in the play were challenged when their free wills faced intimidation caused by gas-lighting and sexual manipulation. It was a frank and powerful script that sparked an animated talk-back.ATTENDANCE AND REACH: 101 paid creatives. 762 patrons. 23 streaming households. 14 podcast guests. 3,000 podcast downloads. | - | $81,450 |
