Mission

National stroke association was formed in 1984 to fill a void as the only national voluntary health care organization focusing 100% of its resources and attention on stroke. The nsa and its supporters are motivated by its strategic mission: to reduce the incidence and impact of stroke. Serving as an information resource center, nsa develops and disseminates information and educational materials to health care professionals, stroke survivors and their families, and the general public. Nsa also helps advance promising avenues of stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.

The organization has its form 990 prepared by an independent auditor, hired by the audit committee of the board of directors. Once the 990 is prepared by the auditor it is presented to management for comments. Once management concurs with the 990 it is presented to the audit committee for their approval. As soon as the 990 is prepared it is available for review to any member of the board of directors. Once the audit committee approves of the 990 it is filed with the irs.

The association follows fasb asc 740 income taxes, which requires entities to determine whether a tax position is more likely than not to be sustained upon examination by the applicable taxing authority. The association has evaluated tax positions taken related to its tax-exempt status, and none are considered to be uncertain; therefore, no amounts have been recognized as of december 31, 2015. Tax returns for the association for the previous three years (2012 through 2014) are subject to examination by the internal revenue service, generally three years after initial filing.
