Financial Statement Notes

Part III, Line 1A: If organization elected under SFAS 116 to not report are, historical treasures, O

Work on the hummingbird project began over 20 years ago. In preparation for publication, the Foundation contracted the creation of original hummingbird paintings by several wildlife artists. One plate will be created for each species to produce a comprehensive two volume set on the entire family of hummingbirds. The first volume will include 93 paintings with all the North American species. The second volume will include all the South American species. A well known bird expert will serve as author. The paintings remain the property of the Organization. Sabal Palm Sanctuary ("Sanctuary") sits on a 527-acre tract of land by the Rio Grande River in Brownsville, Texas and is one of the most uniquely bio-diverse habitats in the United States, containing one of the last vestiges of original Sabal Palm forest. The Sanctuary provides breeding habitat for many endangered or high-priority birds and is a critical source of shelter and food for migrating and wintering species. In 2010 the Foundation reached an agreement with the National Audubon Society to lease and operate the Sanctuary for 25 years, renewable for an additional 25 years. The Audubon Society donated to the Foundation a 30 acre tract of land in-holding within the Sanctuary. Located within the 30 acres is the Rabb Plantation House - a historic Queen Ann style home built in 1891. Substantial restrictions exist as to the use, operation, sale or transfer of the property. The 5,000 square ft. home has been restored and serves as the headquarters of the Foundation and as the visitor and education center for the Sanctuary. The Rabb House is eligible for National Trust designation and has received historic designation from the Texas Historic Commission. Due to the historical nature of the Rabb Plantaion House and the extremely limited market for the property due to usuage restrictions the Rabb Plantation House is carried at no value. Improvements totaling $ 322,239 as of August 31, 2015, are capitalized and no depreciation is recognized. No improvements were made during the year ended August 31, 2015.

Part III, Line 4: Description of organization'S collections and how it furthers its purpose.

THE ORGANIZATION HAS COMMISSIONED ABOUT 100 COLOR PAINTINGS OF NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICAN HUMMINGBIRDS TO BE USED IN A FUTURE PUBLICATION DEALING WITH THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE SPECIES. Because of the nature of the art work, the Organization has been unable to determine their value.

IRS990/Desc0The mission of the Foundation is to provide the highest quality educational opportunities, to foster greater awareness and understanding of ecological issues, and to encourage conservation of critical cultural, historical and natural resources. The Foundation supports the development and publication of education material and a wide variety of educational and conservation programs. The Foundation also provides a wide array of educational programs and resources for the local, as well as the international community through its educational outreach programs at public schools, production of nature films and publications. Best known of the Foundation's programs are the field stations known as Rancho del Cielo and Rancho el Cielito located in the cloud forests of Mexico. These stations provide a "hands on" opportunity for students to work and study in some of the most unique natural settings in the world. Using the facilities at the field stations, the Foundation offers students, educators, and scientists many opportunities in science, conservation and research. Using the field station program, the Foundation has expanded its education and conservation commitment to implement new and innovative projects of global significance. The University of Rio Grande Valley ("UTRGV") and Texas Southmost College ("TSC") created the Field Station Program to facilitate the academic portion of the program in the form of science courses and seminars, art seminars, student group trips, and administrative and academic strategic planning retreats.Use of the field stations of Rancho del Cielo, Rancho El Cielito, and Boxley Grist Mill by the Foundation are facilitated by a lease agreement with TSC. The Foundation manages and maintains the field stations, in part, with funds from these agreements. The Foundation operates the Sabal Palm Sanctuary in Brownsville, Texas under a lease agreement with the National Audubon Society. Within the Sanctuary, the Foundation owns and operates the Rabb Plantation House which serves as its headquarters and as the vistor's center for the Sanctuary.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Work on the hummingbird project began over 20 years ago.
IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1THE ORGANIZATION HAS COMMISSIONED ABOUT 100 COLOR PAINTINGS OF NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICAN HUMMINGBIRDS TO BE USED IN A FUTURE PUBLICATION DEALING WITH THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE SPECIES. Because of the nature of the art work, the Organization has been unable to determine their value.

IRS990ScheduleL/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Foundation contracts with Eric Lof, brother of the President of the Board of the Foundation, to meet United States government requirements for a lease in the Buffalo National River Historic District known as Boxely Mills.
