Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Individualized legal assistance to victims of family violence in counties all over texas. Program attorneys prepare customized legal documents for divorces and protective orders, offer on-going legal advice about the court process, and give detailed instructions to the client about pro se representation. Referrals for assisted pro se are received from domestic violence shelter advocates and the agency's legal hotlines. Potential clients must be able to represent themselves in any hearings and have a case that is unlikely to be contested. Clients accepted into the program are strongly encouraged to work closely with local shelter staff in order to seek and maintain family safety.

Teen justice initiative - the teen justice initiative advocates for survivors of teen dating violence by: collaborating with groups working on domestic violence and sexual assault; increasing awareness of legal rights among young people, parents, schools, and the community; providing free and confidential legal advice and referrals to victims of teen dating violence in texas; and providing legal representation to minors seeking protective orders in central texas. Justice initiative - the justice initiative is a program which serves to educate professionals and advocate for the protective order process throughout the state, as well as using appeals to increase access to courts for domestic violence survivors. This program focuses on systemic change and problems in local legal systems which prevent victims from being able to take advantage of the full range of services available to them. Protective orders

IN SITUATIONS WHERE LEGAL REPRESENTATION IS UNAVAILABLE, THESE DO-IT-YOURSELF PACKETS ALLOW TRADITIONALLY UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS, INCLUDING PEOPLE IN RURAL AREAS AND NON-ENGLISH SPEAKERS, TO TAKE THE FIRST STEPS IN ESTABLISHING SAFETY FOR THEMSELVES AND HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS.
