Mission

To inform and educate the public as to the difference between honest and legitimate advertising and selling and that which is misleading, dishonest and improper, and to prevent the public, by all proper means, from being mislead by persons, partnerships or corporations using unfair advertising or unfair selling practices. To cooperate with better business bureaus and such other organizations having objectives in common, and to do generally such other things as may be necessary, requisite, convenient or proper to carry out the purposes and objects of the corporation, as are permitted under article 2.01 of the texas non-profit corporation act.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THROUGH THE EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES CALLED "T.O.G.G.L.E" (TEACHING OUR GENERATION GREAT LEADERSHIP ETHICS), INCLUDING "LAWS OF LIFE- AND "IN PURSUIT OF ETHICS": THE GOAL IS TO EDUCATE THE FUTURE CONSUMERS AND BUSINESS LEADERS OF SOUTHEAST TEXAS BY EMPOWERING YOUNG PEOPLE WITH ETHICS-BASED TRAINING, PROVIDING TOOLS THAT WILL HELP THEM MAKE POSITIVE, AND ETHICAL CHOICES IN LIFE: AT HOME, AT SCHOOL AND WHEN THEY ENTER THE WORKFORCE. THERE ARE 4,000 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OUR 8-1/2 COUNTY REGION, AND 250 SUBMITTED ESSAYS FOR THE LAWS OF LIFE INITIATIVE. TWELVE STUDENT FINALISTS WERE HONORED, ALONG WITH THEIR TEACHERS AND SCHOOL CAMPUSES AT THE ANNUAL BANQUET IN WHICH TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS AND STUDENTS-$11,929

IN 2017 ONE BUSINESS SEMINAR WITH OVER 85 ATTENDEES WAS HELD INFORMING AND EDUCATING BUSINESSES IN S.E. TEXAS. PROVIDED RESOURCES TO SENIORS IN S. E. Consumer awareness through educational conferences, distribution of pamphlets of educational literature, and responses to phone inquiries on area business. Over 200 consumers were served at the annual shred it - protect your identity event in april, shredding over 5 tons of paper documents. In 2017 one business seminar with over 85 attendees was held informing and educating businesses in s.e. Texas. Provided resources to seniors in s. E. Texas at the annual senior expo event with nearly 2,000 attendees receiving educational materials, fema and disaster relief infomation,as well as entertainment - provided by bbb sponsors and over 50 local business vendors. Produced and aired a series of public service announcements to heighten awareness of bbb consumer education related to contractor scams and fraud in the aftermath of hurricane harvey, and assisted local media in exposing fraudulent players in the market.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 29

The better business bureau torch awards is a fundraising activity to raise funds for scholarships that benefit all four area higher education institutions. Revenues from the banquet and auction enable the bbb consumer education foundation to contribute to scholarships to lamar university, lamar institute of technology, lamar state college-orange and lamar state college-port arthur with scholarships for college students across southeast texas. Total contributions over the past 19 years now totals 225,000. The torch award also seeks public recognition of both for-profit companies and non-profit organizations in our region committed to maintaining exceptionally high standards of ethical behavior in buyer/seller and provider/supporter relationships. There are two categories for for-profit companies: large (21 or more employees, and small (1-20 employees). There is also a category for not-for-profit charity organizations. Winners are recognized and are eligible for international competition. Due to hurricane harvey, funds raised for the october 2017 annual bbb torch award for business ethics were spent in 2018 for the rescheduled event date of february 22, 2018.

Educational programs through the educational initiatives called "t.o.g.g.l.e" (teaching our generation great leadership ethics), including "laws of life- and "in pursuit of ethics": the goal is to educate the future consumers and business leaders of southeast texas by empowering young people with ethics-based training, providing tools that will help them make positive, and ethical choices in life: at home, at school and when they enter the workforce. There are 4,000 middle school students in our 8-1/2 county region, and 250 submitted essays for the laws of life initiative.
