Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Research: mountain studies institute (msi) connects scientists and stakeholders across the san juan mountain region to apply the results of scientific inquiry and make a difference for local communities. Toward that end, we completed and facilitated research which explores solutions to natural resource issues specifically to: - enhance and protect air and water quality - understand climate variability and change - track changes in biological diversity, and forest health - assist mountain communities in transition from extraction economies in 2018 msi worked on 84 projects, including 47 research and monitoring projects. Other work included facilitating historic restoration and university research. Msi collaborated with more than 100 partner organizations to advance mountain science and to build resilience in the san juan region.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Community science and stewardship: msi sponsors community science and stewardship programs for a variety of audiences and ages, including k-12 experiential education, citizen science, field tours, conferences, webinars, college courses, workshops, summer camps, and stewardship projects for community members, researchers, and practitioners. Msi programs cover a variety of topics including climate adaptation, forest health, biodiversity, and water quality. These events and activities are designed to be accessible to students, citizens, and communities sharing cutting edge information for non-technical people. Workshops and education series are free to the public whenever possible. In 2018, msi offered 6 field tours, 8 presentations, 2 conferences, 7 workshops, 1 teacher training, 51 youth programs, and 12 college and high school internships. Msi hosted a mountain discoveries summer series with 5 events and 58 people. This program led people of all ages out into the mountains, learning and giving back to the area that they love. In summary, msi reached over 3,138 people through our outreach programs for a total of 10,545 contact hours. Msi partners and volunteers collectively removed 200 pounds of invasive weeds from iconic trails, treated or monitored approximately 2,500 acres of forests, and restored 2 wetlands planting over 600 grasses, sedges, and carex seedlings.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 2, Part IV, Line 2B

The organization is an administrative agent for a governmental grant and holds funds for other agencies in this administrative capacity. As goals and objectives of the grant are met, the organization releases these funds per instruction from the grantor.

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The organization is exempt from income tax as provided under section 501 (c)(3) of the internal revenue code, except on net income derived from unrelated business activities. The organization adopted accounting requirements that prescribe when to recognize and how to measure the financial statement effects of income tax positions taken or expected to be taken on its income tax returns, including the position that the organization continues to qualify to be treated as a tax-exempt organization for both federal and state income tax purposes. These rules require management to evaluate the likelihood that, upon examination by relevant taxing jurisdictions, those income tax positions would be sustained. Based on that evaluation, if it were more than 50% probable that a material amount of income tax would be imposed at the entity level upon examination by the relevant taxing authorities, a liability would be recognized in the accompanying balance sheet along with any interest and penalties that would result from that assessment. Based on the results of managements evaluation, the requirements did not have a material effect on the organizations financial statements. Consequently, no liability is recognized in the accompanying balance sheet for uncertain income tax positions. The organization's federal returns (form 990) are subject to examination by the internal revenue service generally for three years after they are filed. Should any penalties and interest be incurred, they would be recognized as management and general expenses.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE ORGANIZATION IS AN ADMINISTRATIVE AGENT FOR A GOVERNMENTAL GRANT AND HOLDS FUNDS FOR OTHER AGENCIES IN THIS ADMINISTRATIVE CAPACITY. AS GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE GRANT ARE MET, THE ORGANIZATION RELEASES THESE FUNDS PER INSTRUCTION FROM THE GRANTOR.
IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1THE ORGANIZATION IS EXEMPT FROM INCOME TAX AS PROVIDED UNDER SECTION 501 (C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE, EXCEPT ON NET INCOME DERIVED FROM UNRELATED BUSINESS ACTIVITIES.
