Mission

To provide humanitarian assistance, including providing assistance with basic human needs such as food, clean water, shelter, medicine, and an education to low income people and especially those who have disabilities that restrict their mobility. This will be accomplished, in part, by providing orthopedic equipment, with an emphasis on serving the needs of the "poorest of the poor" children who are disabled and who are living in poverty in third world developing countries.To collect, repair, renovate and customize used medical orthopedic equipment in order to provide them to people with disabilities.To train people with disabilities, as well as their caretakers and their families and their communities, in how to properly use, maintain, and repair their orthopedic equipment.To provide therapeutic consultations and initial physical therapy to people with disabilities who receive the orthopedic equipment which has been distributed.To work with, train and consult with medical professionals

IRS990/Description0Facilities, San Jose Del Cabo: Operations continue in our wheelchair shop, mini-warehouse and patient evaluation area in the DIF Rehabilitation Center. With the continued support of Los Cabos Women's Wellness Foundation, we have received prosthetics and accessories dedicated to women afflicted by breast cancer. The government has donated the use of a new 4,000 square foot building to establish a wheelchair factory employing individuals in wheelchairs. A permit has signed that commits the building to Mobilize Mankind for three years including water and electricity. The city has agreed to install electrical outlets; build ramps; and modify restrooms.Facilities, La Paz: The government has added police security after hours and during the weekend in our wheelchair shop, mini-warehouse and patient evaluation areas. The government has donated the use of a large, new warehouse for managing pallets of donated medical equipment.Facilities, Cuidad Constitucion: The use of a new center was donated by the Mayor of Ciudad Constitution providing a distribution point in the north part of the state which includes a shop, mini-warehouse and patient evaluation area.Wheelchair Factory: Mobilize Mankind has retained a long time volunteer as a consultant to assist in building modifications in Los Cabos. Production is expected to begin in 2013.Medical Equipment Pallets: Mobilize Mankind has shipped 27 pallets of medical equipment from Oregon to La Paz with 27 more waiting to cross the border. In Iowa, 20 pallets slated for the new factory await permission from the Mexican authorities to be shipped.Wheelchair Distributions: Over 100 additional children patients will have been fitted with specialized orthopedic wheelchairs in 2012. We currently have 900 children patients in our program. We have added another distribution point in the north part of Ciudad Constitution state.Prosthetics/Amputee/Orthotic Clinics: We hold prosthetic clinics twice a year, spring and fall, at our shop in La Paz. Attendance at these clinics is increasing. Also, as a result of volunteer Prosthetists assistance, we were able to send several pallets of medical equipment to Baja and to Africa.Spring Break Project: 2012 was a terrific year for our project. All hosting expenses of our dozen volunteers were paid for by the Department of Education. 150 teachers and therapists from all over the state received training from Mobilize Mankind professional volunteers.Developing Stories: We have been working with the Department of Education to establish a tenured position for an Orthotist. This would consist of a 3-month internship in the United States with a world renowned prosthetist. Upon completion of the training, the individual would be able to adjust and modify braces for children throughout the state; perform prosthetic adjustment and perform follow-up work from the prosthetics clinic.Therapy in Educational Settings Conference: Held in Eugene, Oregon, Mobilize Mankind was once again asked to present a breakout focus session sharing our work in Baja to Physical and Occupational therapists employed in the public schools of Oregon.Accessible Playground at the Cabo San Lucas Special Education School: The new playground for the special education primary school was inaugurated February 27, 2012. In 2013, we will install outdoor musical instruments accessible to children in wheelchairs in a shade palapa near the playground.
