Public interest litigation: bdf filed amicus briefs in the u.s. Court of appeals for the ninth circuit on behalf of the catholic medical association and several other medical groups on pharmacist rights of consceince; bdf also conducted research on increased health risks to women of hormonal contraceptives required by the hhs mandate, and filed briefs presenting that research in the u.s. Courts of appeals for the dc circuit, sixth circuit, seventh circuit and eighth circuit in relation to the policy arguments presented in the iom report supporting the hhs mandate.

Activity 3

Media-related education: bdf lawyers served as media experts and spokespersons on issues concerning abortion policy, conscience issues in health reform, federal funding of human embryo research, healthcare rights of conscience, and other bioethics issues. In 2012, bdf lawyers were quoted in at least 59 print articles, 3 television broadcasts, and published opinion pieces in a major national journal. Bdf also educates syndicated opinion writers with background information; webbased and email education via a blog, electronic newsletter, legislative expert testimony, and media education related to the above legislation and efforts in other states.
