| The mission of DEBATE-Kansas City (DKC) is to improve academic performance and increase opportunities for urban students through participation in debate. This year, DKC provided policy debate and student congress services to 5 school districts and 5 charter schools, in 29 high schools and middle schools, with 31 debate teacher/coaches, and 460 students. Direct on-location support was provided over 200 times and included coach mentoring, in-class presentations, after-school practices, curriculum development, evidence preparation, tournament support, and student coaching. DKC events for the year included: five all-day professional development retreats for coaches training; 2 student workshops, 14 debate tournaments; and a year-end student awards and recognition ceremony. DKC published original documents including: debate research files, comprehensive progress reports for each school district, progress reports for key stakeholders, informational website, and original debate curricula for both middle and high schools. DKC helps urban students beat the odds by increasing literacy, critical thinking skills, chances for graduation, and opportunities to attend college. “The Bylaws were amended during the 2013-14 fiscal year to better serve the ongoing mission of the organization. No change was made to the official name of the organization. Changes were made to increase the maximum number of Board members from 15 to 21 to provide for a larger and more diverse Board. Term limits were eliminated to allow committed Board members to continue their service to the organization while clarification of absences was made to allow for removal of uncommitted Board members. Minor changes were made to administrative details of communication by email, quorum required for voting, and a correction to the name of the Registered Agent. A copy of the Bylaws is available upon request from the organization.”
