IRS990/Desc0SAINT JOHN'S PROGRAM FOR REAL CHANGE IS FOCUSED ON PROVIDING DISADVANTAGED, UNDERSERVED WOMEN AND THEIR CHILDREN WITH A PERMANENT PATHWAY OUT OF POVERTY AND HOMELESSNESS. WE BELIEVE ONE OF THE MOST DIRECT WAYS TO REDUCE POVERTY AND INCREASE ECONOMIC MOBILITY IS TO HELP SINGLE MOTHERS BREAK DOWN BARRIERS AND IMPROVE THEIR EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS SO THEY CAN EARN A LIVABLE WAGE AND SUPPORT THEIR FAMILY. SAINT JOHN'S OPERATES THE LARGEST SHELTER IN THE REGION AND THE ONLY ONE FOCUSED EXCLUSIVELY ON WOMEN AND CHILDREN, THE MOST RAPIDLY-GROWING SEGMENT OF THE HOMELESS POPULATION BOTH REGIONALLY AND NATIONALLY. EVERY DAY, WE SERVE UP TO 180 MOTHERS AND CHILDREN (550 EACH YEAR) YET HAVE AN AVERAGE WAITING LIST OF 250. EXISTING REGIONAL SHELTERS CANNOT ACCOMMODATE THE DEMAND AND MOREOVER, PROVIDE A 30-DAY ROOF ONLY. WOMEN SEEKING REAL CHANGE COME TO US FROM ACROSS CALIFORNIA. POPULATION. OUR WOMEN AVERAGE 33 YEARS OLD WITH TWO CHILDREN (35% WERE TEEN MOMS). ETHNIC BACKGROUND. 32% ARE CAUCASIAN, 18% ARE HISPANIC, 14% ARE MIXED RACE AND A DISPROPORTIONATE NUMBER OF OUR FAMILIES ARE AFRICAN AMERICAN, 36% (COMPARED TO 10% IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY). MOST OF OUR FAMILIES ARE FACING MULTIPLE AND COMPLEX BARRIERS TO SELF-SUSTAINABILITY THAT SEEM SO INSURMOUNTABLE THAT THEY HAVE LOST ALL HOPE. 54% STRUGGLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS, 74% ARE ADDICTED TO DRUGS AND/OR ALCOHOL, 76% HAVE EXPERIENCED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, 60% HAVE BEEN INCARCERATED, 40% LACK A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA AND 70% HAVE LITTLE OR NO JOB EXPERIENCE. 47% OF THEIR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN SUFFER FROM ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION AND 36% MANIFEST AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR. MOREOVER, HOUSING IS A MAJOR BARRIER. REGIONAL RENTS ARE EXTREMELY HIGH AND SACRAMENTO VACANCY RATE IS ONE OF THE LOWEST IN THE COUNTRY AT 4%. OUR HOLISTIC AND IMMERSIVE APPROACH CHANGES THE LIVES OF SINGLE WOMEN AND MOTHERS WITH CHILDREN THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE, 12-MONTH PROGRAM THAT IS A TRUE CONTINUUM OF CARE. WE PROVIDE AN UNPARALLELED SUPPORTIVE RESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENT HELPING FAMILIES ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSES OF THEIR HOMELESSNESS, AND THE TOOLS NEEDED TO EXIT THE CYCLE OF POVERTY AND DEPENDENCE, PERMANENTLY TRANSFORMING THEIR LIVES. OUR CONTINUUM INCLUDES MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, PHYSICAL HEALTH SERVICES, EDUCATION, IN-DEPTH ON-THE-JOB TRAINING, JOB COACHING, JOB PLACEMENT AND RETENTION ASSISTANCE, THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL SUPPORT NETWORKS, EXTENSIVE CHILDCARE/CHILD DEVELOPMENT SERVICES, AND TRANSPORTATION, ALL OF WHICH HELP WOMEN ERADICATE ENTRENCHED BEHAVIOR, LEADING THEM TO EMPLOYABILITY, SELF-SUSTENANCE, AND REAL CHANGE. THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED TO SUPPORT WOMEN IN TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR CHILDREN, EACH FAMILY RECEIVES AN AVERAGE OF 675 HOURS OF SERVICES EACH MONTH (8,100 HOURS EACH PER YEAR). INTENSIVE, "REAL WORLD," ON-THE-JOB TRAINING OCCURS AT OUR THREE SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL ENTERPRISES (PLATES CAFE & CATERING, PLATES MIDTOWN AND FIRST STEPS CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER) AND QUALIFIES WOMEN TO ENTER THE CULINARY, HOSPITALITY, RETAIL, AND CHILDCARE FIELDS, WHERE THERE IS A PLENTIFUL SUPPLY OF 'FLEXIBLE-HOUR' JOBS WITH LIVABLE WAGES AND AN UPWARD CAREER PATH FOR TRAINED EMPLOYEES. 96% OF SAINT JOHN'S JOB TRAINING GRADUATES SECURE UNSUBSIDIZED EMPLOYMENT, A CRUCIAL STEP ON THEIR JOURNEYS TO SUCCESS AND SELF-SUSTAINABILITY. WOMEN RECEIVE ONGOING SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE FROM OUR CAREER EDUCATION AND PLACEMENT STAFF, PROVIDING WELL-RESEARCHED JOB PLACEMENT SERVICES FOR OUR EMPLOYMENT-TRAINING GRADUATES. WHILE WOMEN ARE ACTIVE IN REBUILDING THEIR LIVES, WE HAVE DEDICATED, AND EXPERIENCED EMPLOYEES WORKING WITH THEIR CHILDREN TO COUNTERACT THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS OF HOMELESSNESS, POVERTY AND ABUSE. FAMILIES AT SAINT JOHN'S EXPERIENCE TOGETHER THE BENEFITS A STRUCTURED DAILY ROUTINE AND A SAFE AND PREDICTABLE ENVIRONMENT. MOTHERS BECOME POSITIVE ROLE MODELS AND THEIR CHILDREN BEGIN EXEMPLIFYING THAT BEHAVIOR IN THEIR LIFE AND THE CYCLE IS BROKEN. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0AS 120 DAYS IS AN INADEQUATE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR OUR WOMEN TO MAKE THE CHANGES THEY NEED TO MAKE TO BECOME SELF-SUSTAINING, AND AN INADEQUATE AMOUNT OF TIME TO COMPLETE EMPLOYMENT TRAINING, SAINT JOHN'S LAUNCHED A TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM FOR THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE INITIAL 120-DAY PROGRAM. THIS STAGE OF THE PROGRAM PROVIDES WOMEN AND CHILDREN WITH CONTINUED STRUCTURE AND SERVICES BUT IN A MORE INDEPENDENT SETTING. THE FACILITY SERVES UP TO 60 WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND IS CONSISTENTLY OPERATING AT CAPACITY.FOR SOME OF OUR FAMILIES, A FINAL STAGE OF HOUSING IS NECESSARY TO PROVIDE THEM WITH CONTINUED HOUSING AND GUIDANCE WHILE THEY MAKE THE FINAL STEPS IN THEIR JOURNEY TO SELF-SUSTAINABILITY. HERE, SAINT JOHN'S SUBSIDIZES INDIVIDUAL APARTMENT UNITS, WHERE FAMILIES LIVING IN COMMUNITY WITH OTHER FAMILIES WORKING TOWARDS THE SAME GOALS OF SELF-SUSTAINABILITY, WHILE CLIENTS CONTINUE TO RECEIVE CASE MANAGEMENT VOCATIONAL TRAINING, AND COUNSELING. THIS PROGRAM SERVES UP TO 40 WOMEN AND CHILDREN (12-14 FAMILIES).THE WOMEN SAINT JOHN'S SERVES ARE AN AVERAGE 33 YEARS OLD WITH TWO CHILDREN. ALL OF THEM (100%) LIVE BELOW POVERTY LEVEL. OUR WOMENARE 43% AFRICAN-AMERICAN; 22% CAUCASIAN; 21% MIXED RACE; 14% HISPANIC. THEY HAVE ALL ENCOUNTERED MULTIPLE AND COMPLEX ISSUES THAT HAVE LED THEM TO BECOME HOMELESS: LACK OF EDUCATION (45% DO NOT HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA), WORK EXPERIENCE (70% HAVE NEVER HELD A STEADY JOB) AND/OR SOCIAL SUPPORT. FURTHER OBSTACLES TO THEIR ABILITY TO BECOME SELF-SUSTAINING INCLUDE HISTORIES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (70% COME TO US EMBROILED IN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS), MENTAL HEALTH (71% ARE IN NEED OF MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES), PHYSICAL HEALTH ISSUES, AND ALCOHOL/DRUG ADDICTION (75% STRUGGLE WITH ADDICTION). MOST HAVE POOR RENTAL, CREDIT HISTORIES OR BASIC FINANCIAL KNOWLEDGE AND DO NOT HAVE A SOLID SUPPORT NETWORK OR THOSE NETWORKS ARE DYSFUNCTIONAL. SAINT JOHN'S IS PROOF THAT THOUGH THESE WOMEN AND CHILDREN HAVE FOUND THEMSELVES HOMELESS, THEY ARE FAR FROM HELPLESS. KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR SAINT JOHN'S INCLUDE:. 1) LAUNCHED AND SELF-FUNDED THREE SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL ENTERPRISE VENTURES, PROVIDING LEARNING AND CREATING AN EARNED INCOME STREAM; 2) IN 2014 WE MOVED INTO OUR OWN 28,000 SQUARE-FOOT FACILITY, TRIPLING OUR SPACE. PARTNERS INCLUDED WELLS FARGO BANK, BUZZ OATES COMPANIES, CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, FEDERAL HOME LOAN BANK, YOCHA DEHE, HOMEAID, K HOVNANIAN HOMES, ESKATON; 3) CREATED AND SELF-FUNDED "OUR SECOND STORY," A TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM FOR UP TO 15 MOTHERS AND 45 CHILDREN, INCREASING CAPACITY BY ALMOST 40% AND 4) OUR ANNUAL BUDGET HAS QUADRUPLED FROM $1.2 MILLION IN 2007 TO APPROXIMATELY $4 MILLION TODAY, WITH THE PUBLICLY FUNDED SHARE HAVING DROPPED FROM NEARLY 80% IN 2007 TO UNDER 20% TODAY.
