Mission and Program Overview

Mission

She's the first (stf) teams up with grassroots organizations to make sure girls everywhere are educated, respected, and heard. Our vision is a world where every girl can choose her own future.

She's the first teams up with grassroots organizations to make sure girls everywhere are educated, respected, and heard. We strengthen a robust ecosystem of underfunded community-based organizations (cbos), reaching 140,000 girls around the world. We improve graduation rates and life outcomes for girls by providing cbos with grants and trainings focused on girls' sexual and reproductive health and rights, girl-centered program design, and feminist mentorship practices. On a global level, we also drive girl-led advocacy through toolkits, leadership opportunities, and media initiatives, because when girls have more power in their community, everyone benefits.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The organization has its form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm. The form is first reviewed by the president/co-founder and ceo, and she discusses any questions and comments are raised and addressed with its tax advisors. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization regularly monitors and enforces compliance with its conflict of interest policy. Annually, each director, officer, employee, and volunteer is required to review the conflict of interest policy and complete and sign a questionnaire. The completed questionnaires are returned to the organization's co-founder/chief executive officer for review. If a potential conflict is noted, the organization's co-founder/chief executive officer presents this to the organization's board of directors for review and discussion and any follow-up action, if necessary. Prior to board or committee action on a contract or transaction involving a conflict of interest, a director or committee member having a conflict of interest and who is in attendance at the meeting shall disclose all facts material to the conflict of interest. Such disclosure shall be reflected in the minutes of the meeting. A person who has a conflict of interest shall not participate in or be permitted to hear the board's or committee's discussion of the matter except to disclose material facts and to respond to questions. Such person shall not attempt to exert his or her personal influence with respect to the matter, either at or outside the meeting. D. A person who has a conflict of interest with respect to a contract or transaction that will be voted on at a meeting shall not be counted in determining the presence of a quorum for purposes of the vote.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The compensation and benefits of senior management, including the co-founder/chief executive officer and co-founder/chief programs officer, are reviewed by the executive compensation committee ("committee") to ensure fair market value compensation is paid. Where appropriate, the committee reviews external comparable data and seeks advice of external consultants to ensure total compensation of these individuals is reasonable and fair market value. The deliberations and discussion were documented in the minutes. This process was last undertaken in 2020.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0GIRL-LED ADVOCACY INITIATIVES:OUR GIRL-LED ADVOCACY INCORPORATES TWO APPROACHES: WE CREATE RESOURCES FOR GIRLS TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES, AND WE INVITE GIRLS TO SET THE AGENDA FOR OUR CAMPAIGNS AND BEYOND.IN 2020, WE LAUNCHED NEW TOOLKITS FOR GIRLS AND OUR GLOBAL CAMPUS COMMUNITY (THE "GLOBAL GIRLS' BILL OF RIGHTS" TOOLKIT AND "DISCOVER YOUR POWER" JOURNAL), TO SUPPORT THEM IN STANDING UP FOR THEIR RIGHTS ON THE LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. 110,000 GIRLS ACCESSED THEM.OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: WE RALLIED OUR STF CAMPUS COMMUNITY CHAPTERS AT HIGH SCHOOLS, COLLEGES, AND UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE GLOBE ONLINE FOR OUR FIRST-EVER DIGITAL WEEK OF ACTION. 350 STUDENTS TOOK DAILY ACTIONS TO PROTECT AND ADVANCE GIRLS' RIGHTS. OUR STF CAMPUS COMMUNITY DREAMED UP FUN, SAFE EVENTS TO RAISE AWARENESS AND FUNDS. THEY HELD ONLINE GAMING FUNDRAISERS, COOKBOOKS, CROSS-CHAPTER CHALLENGES, AND MORE.FOR DAY OF THE GIRL, WE LAUNCHED THE #GIRLSGETLOUD CHALLENGE, TO AMPLIFY GIRLS' VOICES ON SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS. AN ESTIMATED 175 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED AND #GIRLSGETLOUD POSTS WERE VIEWED MORE THAN 1.8 BILLION TIMES.OUR EXPENSES FOR THIS PROGRAMMING AREA ALSO INCLUDE THE PHOTOGRAPHY, DIGITAL TOOLS, AND STAFF TIME THAT ALLOWS US TO MOBILIZE GIRLS, CONSULT WITH A GIRLS ADVISORY BOARD, AND PRODUCE RIGHTS-BASED CONTENT THAT ULTIMATELY SHIFTS POWER TO THEIR VOICES.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0TRAININGS FOR COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS:LACK OF ACCESS TO PRACTICAL TRAINING AND OTHER RESOURCES PREVENTS COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, WHO ARE BEST-POSITIONED TO CREATE CHANGE FOR GIRLS, FROM DELIVERING ON THEIR UNIQUE VALUE. THIS IS WHY SHE'S THE FIRST OFFERS IN-PERSON AND REMOTE TRAINING TO PRACTITIONERS, TO ADDRESS THEIR NEEDS PERTAINING TO GIRL-CENTERED PROGRAM DESIGN, GIRLS' SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS (SRHR), AND FEMINIST MENTORSHIP MODELS.IN JANUARY 2020, WE HELD A TRAINING IN UGANDA ON COMPREHENSIVE SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH EDUCATION, WHICH EQUIPPED 30 EDUCATORS WITH THE FRAMEWORKS AND TRAINING NEEDED TO IMPLEMENT AN ONGOING SRHR PROGRAM AT THEIR SCHOOL. ADDITIONALLY, THE TRAINING EQUIPPED 25 PEER LEADERS WITH A CURRICULUM AND PEER MENTORSHIP SKILLS TO DISCUSS HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS AND POWER DYNAMICS WITHIN AN AFTER-SCHOOL SETTING. DURING THE PANDEMIC, OUR ANNUAL GIRLS FIRST SUMMIT, VIRTUALLY CONVENED REPRESENTATIVES FROM 70 COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS IN 15 DIFFERENT EAST AND WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES. OVER THREE DAYS, PRACTITIONERS DISCUSSED POLICIES AND PROGRAMS TO ENSURE GIRLS' SAFETY DURING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC AND BEYOND. THIS INCLUDED A GIRL-CENTERED RISK REGISTER THAT WE DEVELOPED, A PRACTICAL TOOL TO ASSIST ORGANIZATIONS IN ANALYZING AND MITIGATING THE RISKS THAT GIRLS IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES ARE FACING AS THEY RESUME LEARNING. THROUGH A WEBINAR, WE TRAINED CBOS ON HOW TO WORK WITH A FOCUS GROUP OF GIRLS AT LEAST ONCE PER YEAR TO UPDATE THE RISK REGISTER AND DEVELOP MITIGATION STRATEGIES.
