Major Activities

Activity 2

Health-General and Rehabilitative: Community education and outreach program. The Humboldt Community Breast Health Project (HCBHP) staff and volunteers participated in 63 outreach and tabling events. We estimate we reached more than 3,700 individuals. During early in the year, we conducted a 2-hour outreach and community education training event for volunteers. We also conducted a community organizing and outreach event in Fortuna, CA. January's cervical cancer awareness month promoted 20 primary care and OB/GYN practices as points of access for low-income, under/uninsured women to receive no-cost women's health care. Staff and volunteers conducted radio interviews for September GYN cancer awareness month and October breast cancer awareness month. In August, HCBHP partnered with Healing Journeys (a Sacramento-area cancer support service non-profit) to offer a day-long "Cancer Fighting Kitchen" educational workshop. This workshop was attended by more than 100 participants. HCBHP held six face-to-face events with a variety of local health care providers for clients to ask questions. HCBHP offered access to 18 national breast and/or gyn cancer-related educational teleconferences for local clients and community members. HCBHP continued to offer its lending library and electronic library with individualized searches by a volunteer information specialist. 1,500 hard-copy HCBHP newsletters were distributed in the Spring and Fall to 60 local medical practices. These newsletters have educational content, volunteer and donor recognition and event promotions.

Activity 3

Health-General and Rehabilitative: Volunteer Program. The Humboldt Community Breast Health Project (HCBHP) provided volunteer opportunities for cancer survivors and support people to further their healing through supporting others. 172 volunteers reported hours and more contributed their time and talent, but did not report hours. HCBHP supported an AmeriCorps VISTA member during the year. The volunteer coordinator worked with the AmeriCorps VISTA member to conduct two community outreach and education training events for volunteers and interested supporters.
