Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To create opportunities for individuals and families to reach self-sufficiency through family support services, education, employment, and leadership. We will achieve this mission by creating an environment that rewards excellence and innovation, encourages mutual respect, and maximizes resources.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Workforce development: one of the keys to achieving self-sufficiency is having a job that pays a livable wage with benefits and an opportunity for career advancement. Many in our region are underemployed because of a lack of marketable job skills and 8% of the residents of our community are jobless due to the economic downturn. In order for our community to be a vibrant place where hopes and dreams are realized, we must have an educated and empowered workforce. 86% of adults and dislocated workers served through career connections entered employment. 91% retained that employment six months after placement. 133 individuals received training through our center for employment training (cet). 70% that were placed into jobs after completing the program were working at 12 months follow-up. 33 individuals received their ged's while participating in cet or our step up. Workforce development served over 25,000 individuals last year alone.
Activity 3
Youth services: on any given night there are over 3,000 youth and young adults homeless and left to find their own way in northern kentucky. The consequences are harsh. Their education is usually interrupted or cut off. They are victims of violence and abuse. They have limited or no access to health care, mental health services, or legal services. Homeless youth can't get an apartment because of their age, background, and lack of identification and income. They can't get a job without identification or a current address. Also, the transition from teenage years to adulthood is rarely easy, even for children with strong parental support and significant resources. For teenagers in state custody, "aging-out" of the system with little or no support can be especially challenging.360 homeless and runaway youth ages 12-17 received crisis services by our homeward bound shelter and 115 were served residentially. 84% of homeless youth served residentially at the shelter were reunited with their families and 93% of all youth admitted remained in their home school while in our care. 65 youth and young adults received transitional living program services with 21 young adults accessing scattered site apartments. 77% of youth who completed the program maintained self-sufficiency.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0YOUTH SERVICES: ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT THERE ARE OVER 3,000 YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS HOMELESS AND LEFT TO FIND THEIR OWN WAY IN NORTHERN KENTUCKY.

IRS990/Description0EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION: NEARLY 50% OF CHILDREN WHO WALK INTO OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS ARE UNPREPARED TO LEARN. TEACHERS ARE FINDING OUT THAT THESE CHILDREN LACK THE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, COGNITIVE, MOTOR, AND SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SKILLS NECESSARY TO SUCCEED. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT A CHILD WHO ENTERS SCHOOL BEHIND HAS A DIFFICULT TIME IN 'CATCHING UP', IF THEY ARE ABLE TO 'CATCH UP' AT ALL. IN ORDER TO COMBAT THIS, OUR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION OFFERS FIVE PROGRAMS THAT WORK WITH CHILDREN AND PARENTS MAKING SURE THAT THEY ARE LEARNING AT AGE APPROPRIATE LEVELS.91% OF THE CHILDREN THAT GRADUATED FROM PRESCHOOL AT OUR BRIGHT DAYS CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER WERE DETERMINED "SCHOOL READY". ALSO, 85% OF THE CHILDREN ENROLLED IN THE HIPPY PROGRAM IN NEWPORT AND BOONE COUNTY FOR THE FULL YEAR WERE ASSESSED AGE APPROPRIATE IN CONCEPTS AND LANGUAGE SKILLS INDICATING NO POTENTIAL DELAYS. 96% OF THE CHILDREN SERVED THROUGH EVERY CHILD SUCCEEDS WERE DEVELOPING AGE APPROPRIATE IN ALL AREAS OF DEVELOPMENT (SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL,PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT), AND 96% OF THE CHILDREN HAD A MEDICAL HOME.
