PART III, LINE 4:

The collections of shaker village are remarkable examples of the craftsmanship of the shakers who inhabited this land. Our mission is to preserve the buildings and land that they left behind and to make available to the greater public these treasures that have now been entrusted to us. Through the buildings, furniture, village plan, and the detailed daily journals that reside within our collection, visitors, scholars, and the public can easily find physical evidence of the guiding principles of the shakers, who sought to create a world in keeping with their spiritual life. Our collection includes 34 original, on-site structures, 3000 acres of shaker farmland, over 5000 objects including 500 items of furniture, 250 textiles, and tools, containers, baskets, small household items and personal artifacts. The library and special collections were established to promote and assist research into the lives and legacy of the shakers. These collections include 2500 books and periodicals, 260 reels of microfilm, 1000 microfiche, as well as video and audio recordings. The rare books collection has over 350 volumes and consists primarily of works published by the shakers or that were used by the pleasant hill community. The collection also includes materials produced by the pleasant hill shakers such as correspondence, handwritten journals, songbooks and ledgers, broadsides, pamphlets, seed packets and preserve labels. The collections are the nucleus of our educational mission. They serve to broaden our understanding of the shakers' daily lives, their ingenuity, and their spiritual beliefs. All of our collections are available to the public for purposes of enjoyment, enrichment, and research and serve to provide depth and meaning to our interpretive programming.

THE SITE IS THE LARGEST SUCH SITE IN AMERICA AND IS ONE OF THE MOST EXTENSIVE INTACT EXAMPLES POSSESSING A HIGH DEGREE OF INTEGRITY EVEN TO THIS DAY. THE BUILDINGS THAT HAVE BEEN PRESERVED ARE CONSIDERED TO BE EXQUISITE EXAMPLES OF THE HARMONIOUS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE AND A BEAUTIFUL ROLLING LANDSCAPE. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT THE BUILDINGS WERE ALL DESIGNED AND BUILT BY UNEDUCATED YET VERY SKILLED CRAFTSMEN USING RUDIMENTARY, HANDMADE TOOLS. SHAKER VILLAGE CONDUCTS A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO HELP EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON THE LIVES OF THE INDIVIDUALS WHO SETTLED THIS COMMUNITY WITH A FOCUS ON THE IMPACT THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS MADE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE AMERICAN FRONTIER. THE SITE IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S FINEST HISTORIC OUTDOOR EDUCATIONAL SITES BECAUSE OF THE INTERPRETATION PROGRAM THAT IS FOCUSED ON THE SOCIAL, ENTREPRENEURIAL AND FAMILIAL RELATIONSHIPS THAT MADE THIS COMMUNITY IMPORTANT TO AMERICA'S DEVELOPMENT.
