Architects use the power of design to solve problems, transform lives, and create a better world. The Architects Foundation celebrates architecture's value by advancing tomorrow's design leaders and preserving architectural treasures of the past.The Architects Foundation, the philanthropic partner of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), is positioning itself for new success, preparing to launch a momentous increase in our scholarship program. By enhancing the program, the Foundation aims to attract and cultivate a diverse next generation of architects, and provide new opportunities to support the evolution of our profession.The Architects Foundation also preserves the historic Octagon building in the nation's capital, seeking ways to best express the values of historic preservation work and keep the Octagon's legacy alive with exhibits, educational programs and partnerships.

In September of 2016, Alexion Fischer, a firm that specializes in non profit management, was hired to take over management duties on an interim basis. Financial compensation paid to Alexion Fischer in 2016 amounted to $38,783. A search for a permanent Executive Director is currently underway.

THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS (AIA), A RELATED 501(C)(6) ORGANIZATION, PROVIDES PERSONNEL ASSISTANCE TO THE Architects FOUNDATION. COMPENSATION IS APPROVED BY THE AIA BOARD OR COMPENSATION COMMITTEE. During the first part of 2016, the Architects Foundation had an executive director, Sherry-Lea Bloodworth-Botop, who worked entirely for the Architects Foundation but was compensated by AIA. Ms. Bloodworth-Botop left the Architects Foundation at the end of March 2016, and received $20,303 in severance. MARTA ZANIEWSKI received compensation from AIA, a related 501(c)(6) organization, for all of 2016. During the first part of 2016, she provided the Architects Foundation with services, from 1/1/2016 to 3/31/2016. She remained employed at AIA for the remainder of 2016. The compensation reported for Zaniewski in Form 990, Part VII reflects her full 2016 compensation received for the period 1/1/2016 to 12/31/2016.

Financial Statement Notes

Part III, Line 1A:

As part of acquiring the Octagon building during the year ended December 31, 2010, The Foundation assumed ownership of approximately 450 artifacts. The value of the artifacts is not included in the accompanying financial statements. There were no deaccessions during the years ended December 31, 2016 and 2015.

Part III, Line 4:

The collections consist of furniture, household and kitchen accessories, flatware, hollow ware, china, and other household artifacts that date to the original owners of the octagon.

Part V, Line 4:

The purpose of both the temporarily and permanently restricted endowments is to fund scholarships, which is a significant part of the foundation's exempt purpose. Please see part iii of form 990 for additional information on the scholarship programs.
