Major Activities

Activity 2

The after school program provides tutoring to over 550 students in kindergarten through second grade in three of the elementary schools in immokalee. The goal of the program is to ensure that students are functioning on grade level when they enter third grade. An 8 week summer educational program is also provided to these students to decrease the effect of the loss of learning which occurs during the summer months. There is no charge to the parents for these programs. Students who were identified as at risk of failure who are struggling academically are leaving the program performing at or above the norm for the county.

Activity 3

The guadalupe center's tutor corps program offers a solution to the high dropout rate and low post secondary education rate in immokalee. This comprehensive program was designed to provide assistance to students from low income homes, enabling them to graduate from high school and attend a post secondary education program. Currently there are 63 students participating in the program and 105 students attending college. The components of the program include a wage for working as tutors in the after-school program, a comprehensive college prep program, a mentor from the community, summer college experiences and scholarship funds upto 4,000 per year for each year the student is in the program. There is also a college support component for students who have graduated and are attending college. For the past six years 100% of the students enrolled in the program were accepted into college.
