FORM 990, PART I, LINE 1 ORGANIZATION'S MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES

Safe children coalition, inc. Is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1945 committed to providing a diverse array of services to the most disadvantaged and at-risk youth and families in our community. Since 1997, scc has been the contracted lead agency with the department of children and families to provide foster care, adoptions and related child welfare services in circuit 12, covering sarasota, manatee and desoto counties. Scc leads a collaboration of many local community entities who together provide a continuum of child welfare services for children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Last year, scc served over 9,200 children, of which over 7,400 were in foster care and related services or diverted from the foster care system. Scc helps over 160 youth get adopted annually. In addition to child welfare services, scc also provides an array of other social services including prevention, diversion, education, and afterschool care services for 3 elementary schools within sarasota county (adventure club). We operate the only shelter in sarasota for homeless, foster, and runaway youth aged 10-17 years. The shelter is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is contracted through the florida network of youth and family services, inc. To provide voluntary care to children in need of services (cins) at no cost. Scc provides early childhood literacy through our home instruction for parents of preschool youngsters (hippy) program with services to more than 200 parents and children each year. Hippy is a home-based early childhood education program for parents of 2-5 year olds. Our homeless youth education support program (schoolhouse link) serves more than 800 youth every school year. This program provides support to the entire family by linking them with essential service providers and community resources. Our achievers program assists over 220 youth with college and career preparation, personal development, community service, leadership, cultural enrichment and career opportunities.

THE YOUTH SHELTER PROVIDES TEMPORARY HOUSING AND CARE FOR CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 10 AND 17 WHO HAVE RUN AWAY, ARE EXPERIENCING CONFLICT, OR HAVE BEEN LOCKED OUT OF THEIR HOMES. THE YOUTH SHELTER PROVIDED A SAFE PLACE FOR CHILDREN IN A FAMILY-LIKE ATMOSPHERE FOR A TOTAL OF 3103 BED DAYS. THE CHILDREN RECEIVE DAILY TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM SCHOOL AND AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING. EACH CHILD PARTICIPATES IN INDIVIDUAL, GROUP AND FAMILY COUNSELING AND A VARIETY OF EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES. YOUTH PREVENTION SERVICES PROVIDED FREE COUNSELING SERVICES TO 464 YOUTH (AGES 10-17) AND THEIR FAMILIES IN THE AREAS OF ANGER MANAGEMENT, PEER RELATIONS, SELF-ESTEEM, SCHOOL, AND HOME BEHAVIORS. THE SCHOOLHOUSE LINK PROGRAM, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SARASOTA COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD, HELPED TO IDENTIFY 749 HOMELESS STUDENTS IN THE COUNTY. THERE WERE OVER 220 STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE ACHIEVERS PROGRAM WHOSE MISSION IS TO EMPOWER AT-RISK YOUTH TO MAKE AND ACHIEVE POSITIVE GOALS. THE PROGRAM ENCOURAGES CONTINUOUS GROWTH IN THE AREAS OF: 1. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT 2. COLLEGE PREPARATION 3. COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP 4. WORKFORCE READINESS 5. RECREATION. IN FISCAL YEAR 2022, $44,000 WAS AWARDED IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO GRADUATES OF THE ACHIEVERS PROGRAM FOR CONTINUING COLLEGE EDUCATION.
