Aging matters in brevard, a non-profit organization, develops solutions to community problems, promotes and maintains independence, and maximizes the quality of life for the citizens of brevard county, particularly the elderly and disabled adult.
Seniors to live in their homes safely and independently thus avoiding premature institutionalization. Our programs include: meals on wheels, seniors at lunch, housing improvement, case management, homemaking, personal care, respite, and transportation. We provide support services to care givers, maintain the sunflower house, and provide health and wellness. Through our retired senior volunteer program, we recruit and place volunteers, ages 55 and in impact positions throughout brevard county.

“Home care served 204 unduplicated clients for a total of 31,641 hours of the following services: 151 seniors received 14,631 hours of assistance with shopping, light housekeeping, and meal preparation. 86 seniors received 10,199 hours of assistance with their personal care. 43 caregivers were provided 4,713 hours of respite relief. 11 seniors received 2,098 hours of companionship to preventsocial isolation and loneliness.”
“Other program services the kitchen prepared and delivered 231,375 meals to meals on wheels recipients and seniors at lunch sites; an additional 111,670 meals to adult day centers, child care centers, and charter schools. In partnership with united way of brevard and local corporations, 425 meals were delivered on four (4) saturdays by corporate employees. The kitchen served 8,449 meals to low-income children attending summer lunch programs. The kitchen catered 112 functions, serving 14,338 meals. The seniors assistance program supports at risks seniors in the early stages of difficulty. The home improvement team worked 6,635 hours installing grab bars, building access ramps, and completing minor home repairs, helping 1,748 seniors live safely in their own homes. Ninety-four (94) seniors received 15,140 rides to medical appointments or to senior at lunch sites. Case management services helped 132 clients and their families obtain 2,520 hours of help with light housekeeping. Brevard county legal aid helped 136 seniors with civil matters suchas protection against foreclosure, guidance with landlord-tenant issues, protection from consumer fraud, and assistance with advanced directives. The senior transerve program volunteers provided 3,609 one way trips using their own vehicles and fuel to transport 174 unduplicated, non-driving senior and veteran clients. Fifty-seven (57) senior transerve volunteer drivers traveled 32,421 miles donating 2,650 hours of service. Forty-five (45) vets driving vets volunteer drivers traveled 24,344 miles donating 1,396 hours of service. Transportation included visits to 370 destinations to include: medical appointments, the va clinic, hospitals, pharmacies, grocery stores, and beauty/barber shops. The sunflower house is a senior and a caregiver resource center offering information, referrals, training, support, and social activities located at the merrit square mall. Six hundred and ninety-seven (697) individuals received information about community resources for caregivers and seniors. Education on agency programs and services was provided at 60 health fairs, community events, presentations to community organizations, and civic organizations. Thirty-one (31) volunteers donated 4,622 hours of service answering phone calls and providing information and referrals to visiting seniors and caregivers. Seventy (70) seniors participated in 98 hours of exercise classes. Caregivers and their loved one received 433 hours of screening and assessments. Seventy-three (73) caregivers and their families received 3,824 hours of in-home respite care and 11,922 hours of adult day care. The grand parenting againd programs provided 28 hours of supportive services to 8 grandparents who are primary caregivers for 11 minor relative children. Caregiver life transitions provide 24 hours of caregivers group gerontological counseling clients. Seniors that participated i the caregiver support program received 113 hours of training and support. Consumable medical supplies totaling 18,227 were provided to caregivers and seniors. The medical equipment bank distributed 474 wheelchairs, walkers, canes, bedside commodes, and shower chairs. The retired and senior volunteer program (rsvp) identifies needs in the community and engages seniors 55 and older into volunteer service. The program helps match individuals with high impact volunteer opportunities at local non-profit or government organizations. Four hundred and eight (480) volunteers aged 55 and older provided 38,069 hours of service values at 692,861. Rsvp volunteers were recruited to help support 14 not-for-profit and governmental agencies. Bone builders exercise classes help prevent osteoporosis by improving bone and muscle strength while also working to better balance. Classes are held twice weekly at seven (7) locations throughout brevard county with 371 senior participants. One hundred percent (100%) of volunteers were placed in programs that are focused on health futures,”
“The organization is exempt from income taxes under section 501(a) of the internal revenue code as described in section 501(c)(3) and is classified as other than a private foundation. Contributions to the organization are qualified as deductions for charitable contributions. The organization accounts for income taxes in accordance with financial accounting standards board accounting standards codification ("fasb asc") 740, income taxes, which clarifies the accounting and disclosure requirements for uncertainty in tax positions. It requires a two-step approach to evaluate tax positions and determine if they should be recognized in the financial statements. The two-step approach involves recognizing any tax positions to determine if they are recognizable in the financial statements. Management regularly reviews and analyzes all tax positions and has determined that no uncertain tax positions requiring recognition have occurred. The organization is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. The organization believes it is no longer subject to income tax examinations for periods prior to 2014.”

THE HOME IMPROVEMENT TEAM WORKED 6,635 HOURS INSTALLING GRAB BARS, BUILDING ACCESS RAMPS, AND COMPLETING MINOR HOME REPAIRS, HELPING 1,748 SENIORS LIVE SAFELY IN THEIR OWN HOMES. NINETY-FOUR (94) SENIORS RECEIVED 15,140 RIDES TO MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS OR TO SENIOR AT LUNCH SITES. CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES HELPED 132 CLIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES OBTAIN 2,520 HOURS OF HELP WITH LIGHT HOUSEKEEPING. BREVARD COUNTY LEGAL AID HELPED 136 SENIORS WITH CIVIL MATTERS SUCHAS PROTECTION AGAINST FORECLOSURE, GUIDANCE WITH LANDLORD-TENANT ISSUES, PROTECTION FROM CONSUMER FRAUD, AND ASSISTANCE WITH ADVANCED DIRECTIVES. THE SENIOR TRANSERVE PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED 3,609 ONE WAY TRIPS USING THEIR OWN VEHICLES AND FUEL TO TRANSPORT 174 UNDUPLICATED, NON-DRIVING SENIOR AND VETERAN CLIENTS. FIFTY-SEVEN (57) SENIOR TRANSERVE VOLUNTEER DRIVERS TRAVELED 32,421 MILES DONATING 2,650 HOURS OF SERVICE. FORTY-FIVE (45) VETS DRIVING VETS VOLUNTEER DRIVERS TRAVELED 24,344 MILES DONATING 1,396 HOURS OF SERVICE. TRANSPORTATION INCLUDED VISITS TO 370 DESTINATIONS TO INCLUDE: MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS, THE VA CLINIC, HOSPITALS, PHARMACIES, GROCERY STORES, AND BEAUTY/BARBER SHOPS. THE SUNFLOWER HOUSE IS A SENIOR AND A CAREGIVER RESOURCE CENTER OFFERING INFORMATION, REFERRALS, TRAINING, SUPPORT, AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES LOCATED AT THE MERRIT SQUARE MALL. SIX HUNDRED AND NINETY-SEVEN (697) INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED INFORMATION ABOUT COMMUNITY RESOURCES FOR CAREGIVERS AND SENIORS. EDUCATION ON AGENCY PROGRAMS AND SERVICES WAS PROVIDED AT 60 HEALTH FAIRS, COMMUNITY EVENTS, PRESENTATIONS TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS. THIRTY-ONE (31) VOLUNTEERS DONATED 4,622 HOURS OF SERVICE ANSWERING PHONE CALLS AND PROVIDING INFORMATION AND REFERRALS TO VISITING SENIORS AND CAREGIVERS. SEVENTY (70) SENIORS PARTICIPATED IN 98 HOURS OF EXERCISE CLASSES. CAREGIVERS AND THEIR LOVED ONE RECEIVED 433 HOURS OF SCREENING AND ASSESSMENTS. SEVENTY-THREE (73) CAREGIVERS AND THEIR FAMILIES RECEIVED 3,824 HOURS OF IN-HOME RESPITE CARE AND 11,922 HOURS OF ADULT DAY CARE. THE GRAND PARENTING AGAIND PROGRAMS PROVIDED 28 HOURS OF SUPPORTIVE SERVICES TO 8 GRANDPARENTS WHO ARE PRIMARY CAREGIVERS FOR 11 MINOR RELATIVE CHILDREN. CAREGIVER LIFE TRANSITIONS PROVIDE 24 HOURS OF CAREGIVERS GROUP GERONTOLOGICAL COUNSELING CLIENTS. THE PROGRAM HELPS MATCH INDIVIDUALS WITH HIGH IMPACT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT LOCAL NON-PROFIT OR GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS. FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHT (480) VOLUNTEERS AGED 55 AND OLDER PROVIDED 38,069 HOURS OF SERVICE VALUES AT 692,861. RSVP VOLUNTEERS WERE RECRUITED TO HELP SUPPORT 14 NOT-FOR-PROFIT AND GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES.
