Activity 2

Research completed analyses on energy content of fuels, fuel consumption, and remote sensing of burn severity in southern pine communities. Validated use of satellite imagery to estimate burn severity from wild fires now supporting fire management on national forests. Assisted landowners with managing threatened and endangered species in red hills including attracting cost-share for management practices. Completed survey of endangered red cockaded woodpecker cavity trees in red hills. Reanalyzed data from stoddard fire plots and published on effects of fire frequency on plant communities.

Activity 3

Land conservancy tall timbers research station and land conservancy was accredited in 2009 by the land trust accreditation commission. The accreditation seal is awarded to land trusts that meet national quality standards, uphold the public trust and ensue that conservation transactions are permanent. Tall timbers will be up for accreditation renewal in 2014. In 2011, tall timbers land conservancy completed four (4) easements protecting 6,680 acres bringing the total acres conserved by the organization through donated easements to approximately 120,757 acres in north florida and southwest georgia. Beyond land conservation, planning staff completed a study to determine the economic value of ecosystem services provided by red hills private forest. The study was in conjunction with a university of georgia project that analyzed the monetary benefit of georgia forests. Finally, the planning staff was also involved in coordinating a workshop in albany, georgia focusing on identifying critical issues affecting the flint river. This workshop brought together 13 conservation organizations working in the flint river basin.
