Major Activities

Activity 2
TRAINING The Motheread Training Coordinator and other staff made 11 technical assistance visits to 10 community colleges and one community based organization across the state. These visits provided an opportunity for program evaluations and recommendations for improvement. Fourteen trainings were held across the state with 285 people being trained through the initiative funded by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) office. The most frequently offered training was Keeping it Real: Contextualized Instruction. The majority of participants trained were ABE faculty. In addition to the trainings funded by the North Carolina Community College System office, 36 other trainings were conducted in North Carolina and in our affiliate network across the country. Twenty-eight trainings were held in Colorado, one in Connecticut, one in Illinois, one in Hawaii, and five in North Carolina. A total of 486 people completed these trainings. NEW INITITATIVES AND PARTNERSHIPS This past fiscal year presented us with several exciting opportunities and new initiatives both in our national affiliate network, in North Carolina, and in Wake County. Our Colorado affiliate (Colorado Humanities) began the first full year of their five-year initiative that is providing Motheread/Fatheread Institutes and Story Exploring throughout the state of Colorado. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to increase the frequency and quality of low-literacy parent/childcare provider/early childhood educator reading to children, more visits to libraries and more books in homes and childcare centers. On the state level, Motheread continues to be part of the State Implementation Team for the Early Learning Challenge grant from the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Initial planning and implementation of programming has started in four eastern North Carolina counties - Chowan, Bertie, Beaufort, and Hyde. We have continued to work as part of the leadership team of the Wake Up and Read initiative that is a community approach, led by Wake County Public School System staff, with a goal of having all children reading on grade level by the end of third grade. Motheread is involved primarily in implementing programming that will help parents help their children improve their reading skills. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT In 2011/12, we wrote a supplement for the Motheread/Fatheread curriculum to add three additional Literacy as Art sections. During 2012/13, these additions were field tested and proven to be a valuable addition to the curriculum. One Section is written for infants, one for toddlers, and one for preschoolers. Each section is based on an age-appropriate book, and includes accompanying information and activities. This new supplement gives instructors the opportunity to further discuss adult lesson material in the context of a book that parents will take home to practice with very young children. Two new curriculum initiatives were also identified and begun. One was the need for a supplement to the Motheread/Fatheread Curriculum for instructors who work exclusively with ESL populations. The second was a workshop curriculum that will be used in specialized workshops for parents of preschoolers. Both of these initiatives will be completed early in the next fiscal year. We also added a new, on-line, module that contains a series of learning activities that can be used with ESL students. The module, Civics in Context 3 - Technology, is a series of learning opportunities that encourage ESL students to use technology within the context of learning English and civics.
