Mission

Promoting and enhancing literacy practices

Major Activities

Activity 2
TRAINING The Motheread Training Coordinator and other staff made 13 technical assistance visits to 12 community colleges across the state. These visits provided an opportunity for program evaluations and recommendations for improvement. Thirteen trainings were held across the state with 210 people being trained through the initiative funded by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) office. The most frequently offered training was Keeping it Real: Contextualized Instruction. The majority of participants trained were ABE faculty. In addition to the trainings funded by the North Carolina Community College System office, six others were conducted in North Carolina and in our affiliate network across the country. The out-of-state trainings were held in Colorado, Connecticut, and Washington. A total of 107 people completed these trainings. NEW INITITATIVES AND PARTNERSHIPS This past fiscal year presented us with several exciting opportunities and new initiatives both in our national affiliate network, in North Carolina, and in Wake County. Our Colorado affiliate (Colorado Humanities) has launched a five-year initiative that will provide Motheread/Fatheread Institutes and Story Exploring throughout the state of Colorado. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to increase the frequency and quality of low-literacy parent/childcare provider/early childhood educator reading to children, more visits to libraries and more books in homes and childcare centers. On the state level, Motheread has been included as a program that will be part of an early childhood initiative implemented in the eastern part of our state. North Carolina won a Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge grant from the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. We have joined an initiative through Wake County Public School System to implement programming to help parents help their children improve their reading skills. The ultimate goal of the initiative is that all children will read on grade level by the end of third grade. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT We wrote a supplement for the Motheread/Fatheread curriculum to add three additional Literacy as Art sections. One Section is written for infants, one for toddlers, and one for preschoolers. Each section is based on an age-appropriate book, and includes accompanying information and activities. This new supplement gives instructors the opportunity to further discuss adult lesson material in the context of a book that parents will take home to practice with very young children. WEBSITE We launched a new website this year. The new website not only contains material about all of our programming and services, but also includes free resources for both practitioners and parents.

IRS990/Description0Services to Adults Literacy development classes were provided throughout Wake County in partnerships with the North Carolina Community College System Office, the North Carolina Department of Corrections, the Wake County Department of Human Services, SAFEchild, Inc., First United Methodist Church-Cary, and Apex United Methodist Church. Of those people served, a total of 204 students attended Motheread/Fatheread classes in community and correctional settings, and 451 students received instruction in special topic literacy classes. A total of 20,260 instructional hours were provided to these students. Following an average of 31 hours of instruction, students who were pre and post-tested improved an average of .8 grade levels on CASAS for ESL students and 1.4 grade levels on CASAS for ABE students. Services to Children In partnership with Meredith College and community volunteers, 92 people provided a total of 1,000 hours of reading and literacy support services. Services to Childcare Professionals A professional development program for Wake County childcare providers was conducted with funding from Wake County SmartStart. Eighteen trainings were provided in seven childcare centers. A total of 108 teachers were served with 100% improving in read-aloud strategies and literacy development activities, and 91% improving their classroom literacy environments. YMCA We began our partnership with the YMCA's Camp High Hopes at the end of the fiscal year. The relationship continued through July 2012. We supported the literacy instruction program by training teen counselors in leadership training (CILTS) who were assigned to Camp High Hopes. A total of 55 counselors and 17 CILTS were served, who in turn, provided literacy support for the campers.
