Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Trees atlanta protects and improves atlanta's urban forest by planting, conserving, and educating the public about the benefits of trees and their importance for the health and well-being of our citizens. We empower community-based forestry and depend on volunteers and the engagement of residents and municipalities from across the region. Since our founding in 1985, trees atlanta has planted over 156,000 trees throughout metro atlanta. Our aim is to build a community where residents and the natural world coexist in a thriving urban ecosystem that addresses environmental injustices, increases air quality, fosters better health outcomes, facilitates more job opportunities, invites more social engagement and creates safer and healthier neighborhoods.

We like to say we don't just plant trees, we plant communities. (continued on schedule o.)

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Line 1

Trees atlanta works with an active volunteer corps of approximately 1,500 people. Our volunteers are caring citizens from all over atlanta and include groups of individuals from atlanta's universities such as morehouse, georgia state, emory, georgia tech, and spelman and the business community including ups, kaiser permanente, mercedes-benz, the home depot and the coca-cola company. Volunteers contributed more than 30,000 hours of service in fy16 to plant and care for young shade trees throughout metro-atlanta. Trees atlanta's capital campaigns have funded transformational program expansion and tree planting projects, like the treehouse education center and the installation of the atlanta beltline arboretum. Non-profit accounting records the total revenues from the campaign during the year funds were received. However, the expenses are recorded in the year of the actual expenses. As a result, the form 990 will present a significant profit in years one and two of the campaign and then a loss in the following years due to the prior recognition of campaign revenue but the current recognition of campaign funded program expenses. In 2014, trees atlanta launched a capital campaign which produced a significant profit in the 2014 and 2015 results due to this accounting standard. However, the 2013 and 2012 form 990s presented losses with the second and third years of expenses from the prior 2011 capital campaign.

IRS990/Desc0TREES ATLANTA HELPS CITIZENS PROTECT AND CARE FOR TREES AND ALSO EDUCATES YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS ABOUT THE VALUE OF OUR URBAN FOREST. IN THE 2015/2016 PLANTING SEASON, TREES ATLANTA PLANTED AND CARED FOR 3,899 SHADE TREES IN ATLANTA WITH VOLUNTEERS AND CONTRACTORS. DURING FY16, TREES ATLANTA VOLUNTEERS PLANTED 3,714 NEIGHBORWOODS TREES (6-8 FT TALL) AND 2,800 SEEDLINGS (1 GALLON). TREES ATLANTA'S URBAN TREE PROGRAM PLANTED 205 15-FOOT TALL TREES IN METRO-ATLANTA SIDEWALKS, PUBLIC SPACES AND ON PRIVATE COMMERCIAL PROPERTY DURING FY16. THESE TREES ARE TYPICALLY INSTALLED BY CONTRACTORS AND CARED FOR BY TREES ATLANTA'S URBAN FORESTRY CREW. TREES ATLANTA'S FOREST RESTORATION PROGRAM TRANSFORMS OVERGROWN GREENSPACES INTO HEALTHY FORESTS THROUGH INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL IN THE METRO-ATLANTA AREA. IN FY16, TREES ATLANTA TREATED MORE THAN 192 ACRES OF INVASIVE SPECIES. TREES ATLANTA WORKS TIRELESSLY TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC, BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS, ABOUT THE EXTRAORDINARY BENEFITS OF TREES AND THE NEED TO PROTECT AND EXPAND ATLANTA'S OWN TREE CANOPY. SPECIFIC EDUCATION EFFORTS INCLUDE OUR IN-SCHOOL EDUCATION PROGRAM, URBAN TREE TRACKERS, AND YOUTH SUMMER CAMP, JUNIOR TREE KEEPERS. NEW IN 2016, WE INTRODUCED THE YOUTH TREE TEAM, A JOB AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM DESIGNED TO EMPLOY AND EDUCATE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. A KEY COMPONENT OF OUR YOUTH EDUCATION IS SERVICE LEARNING WHICH ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN BY DOING. CURRENT ADULT EDUCATION OFFERINGS INCLUDE OUR TREEKEEPERS PROGRAM, TREEWALKS, ATLANTA BELTLINE ARBORETUM WALKING TOURS, A SPEAKER SERIES AND OUR ANNUAL TREE SALE. AN EDUCATED PUBLIC WILL LEAD TO IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT ATLANTA AND THE SURROUNDING AREA. THROUGH THESE EFFORTS, WE EDUCATED MORE THAN 13,351 PEOPLE IN FY16.
