Development of documents for public interest in forestry programs. NAUFRPs Immediate Past-President and Education chair were significantly involved in the development and publication (May 2014) of the Science, Education and Outreach Roadmap for Natural Resources. Additionally, NAUFRP representatives participated in the writing and review of each of the major chapters/challenge areas identified in the publication. The Roadmap also involved the Association of Public Land Grant Universities (APLU) and affiliated university organizations representing wildlife, mining, water resources, ecology, fisheries and range management. http://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/xmlui/bitstream/handle/1957/47169/APLU_NRRoadmap_FINAL.pdf?sequence=4NAUFRP signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the American Forest Foundation. It is intended to formalize the exchange of forestry and natural resource research, education and extension priorities between the two organizations annually. This information will be posted and kept current on the NAUFRP webpage.NAUFRPs President and Research Chair served on the planning committee for a meeting of the McIntire-Stennis Administrative Technical Representatives (ATRs) on March 5, 2014 in Washington, D.C. The McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Program is the core forestry research program funded through the USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture. Many NAUFRP representatives participated in this meeting intended to provide a forum of dialogue between the universities and USDA to ensure forestry programs continue to effectively research the most important forestry related topics at the state and national levels. Administered the 2014 Family Forest Education Award cosponsored with the National Woodland Owners Association and presented annually at the NAUFRP General Assembly, this last year on October 8th in Salt Lake City, UT. http://naufrp.org/pdf/family_forest_2014.pdf$51,873-
Annual meeting of membership - papers presented and speakers on current topics. Representing 67 of the nation's universities, the NAUFRP has focused recent efforts on a number of emerging topics. It has worked with public and private sector partners to identify and prioritize a national research agenda, and formed alliances with other non-governmental organizations on a range of issues including natural resource sustainability, renewable energy, and climate change.$43,533-
Liaison with USDA research and education programs, which has identified critical needs in graduate education, and resulted in a USDA National Needs Fellowship Program. NAUFRPs President, President-Elect, Education and International Committee Chair served formal roles in the organization of the XXIV International Union of Forest Research Organizations World Congress held October 5-9, 2014 in Salt Lake City, Utah. NAUFRP also funded 31 grants to graduate students for registration fees for $150 each. (Initially 33 grants were awarded but two students received funding from other sources and their grants were refunded to NAUFRP.) Further, NAUFRP agreed to fund a $5,000 grant (paid in 2015) to Michigan Tech University to survey students attending the World Congress regarding their perspectives on enrolling in undergraduate forestry programs in the U.S. and elsewhere. This follows-up on U.S. surveys conducted in 2004, 2007 and 2010. Results of this survey will be incorporated into a published, peer-reviewed article by Dr. Terry Sharik (Dean, School of Forest Resources and Environmental Studies, Michigan Tech University) in the Journal of Forestry sometime in 2015.NAUFRPs President and Education Chair served on the Steering Committee and other NAUFRP member representatives involved in program committees for the North American Summit on Forestry Research and Education held at University of California, Berkeley in May 7-9, 2014. This involved a major national survey to assess the degree to which the current curricula at U.S. universities are meeting the needs of forestry employers and recent graduates and is intended to build upon the results of a similar survey conducted in 1999. NAUFRP contributed $5,000 for the survey conducted by the Pinchot Institute for Conservation Studies. Results of the Summit will be published in a peer-reviewed issue of the Journal of Forestry sometime in 2015. http://ucanr.edu/sites/berkeleysummit/NAUFRPs President and Policy Chair participated in Envisioning the Future of Higher Education in Natural Resources, a meeting held in Washington, D.C. on July 28, 2014 with members of the Association of University Fisheries and Wildlife Programs.$28,182$10,150
