Mission

To represent member institutions in advancing excellence in education, research, and outreach essential to healthy, productive, and sustainable forest ecosystems for the benefit of society domestically and internationally.

To represent member institutions in advancing excellence in education, research, and outreach essential to healthy, productive, and sustainable forest ecosystems for the benefit of society domestically and internationally. In 2017, NAUFRP continued its focus on strengthening regional organizations and engaging membership. Executive Committee members also contributed to the design and content of the new NAUFRP web page.

The NAUFRP Executive Committee began discussions with the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities and USDA Forest Service to begin implementation of recommendations by the Blue Ribbon Commission on Forest and Forest Products Research and Development. The Commission reviewed the state of research in the forest sector and produced a final report in October 2017 http://www.usendowment.org/blueribbonreport.html.Increasing diversity and inclusion within NAUFRP institutions (faculty and student body) continues to be a priority of the organization. NAUFRP has assisted the Society of American Foresters (SAF) with developing a national Diversity and Inclusion Policy, created a Diversity and Inclusion Working Group and Diversity Leadership Award. NAUFRP is discussing establishing a clearing house on academic institutions diversity efforts/actions for the associations webpage . The NAUFRP Diversity Chair participates in the annual meetings of the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences the 1890 (institutions) Agriculture Research Directors.The Executive Committee continued to work in 2017 to integrate and merge data that NAUFRP has collected over a two decade period on students in forestry and natural resources programs with that collected by the USDA Food and Agricultural Education System (http://www.faeis.ahnrit.vt.edu/). The lead FAEIS Project Leader met with the Committee at the November 14, 2017 meeting in Albuquerque, NM to discuss ongoing issues.The association is in the process of developing a Forest Health Initiative in collaboration with the Association of Public Land Grant University. Lead by Dean John Hayes (Colorado State University) a steering committee was established and a white paper developed and approved by both organizations outlining the structure and writing teams needed. Work will continue into 2018.$20,486-
Annual meeting of membership - papers presented and speakers on current topics. Representing 67 of the nation's universities, the NAUFRP has focused recent efforts on a number of emerging topics. It has worked with public and private sector partners to identify and prioritize a national research agenda, and formed alliances with other non-governmental organizations on a range of issues including natural resource sustainability, renewable energy, and climate change.Sponsored the annual Family Forests Education Award with the National Woodland Owners Association. The Executive Committee established an Ad Hoc Communications Committee chaired by Dean Mary Watzin (North Carolina State University) as part of the continued implementation of the USDA McIntire-Stennis Program Strategic Plan which the membership worked on over 2015-2016. The goals of the committee are to 1) increase brand awareness and build sufficient recognition of the value of the McIntire-Stennis program to ensure ongoing support and funding; 2)Communicate aligned and compelling stories that illustrate the value and impact of the McIntire-Stennis program across the US; and, 3) Connect the dots directly between what McIntire-Stennis funds and the many unique impacts, innovations and innovators that results of the program. A workshop was held in Atlanta in August 2017 comprised of NAUFRP members and work continued in another workshop at the NAUFRP General Assembly meeting on November 15, 2017 in Albuquerque, NM. The work will continue into 2018.In late 2017, the NAUFRP leadership communicated with the general membership encouraging them to participate in a Listening Session process by the USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) on top food and agricultural (includes forestry) research, extension and education priorities the agency should address. Of the results, two forestry priorities forest health and ecosystem services were identified in the top ten responses the agency received.$10,515-

The lead FAEIS Project Leader met with the Committee at the November 14, 2017 meeting in Albuquerque, NM to discuss ongoing issues.The association is in the process of developing a Forest Health Initiative in collaboration with the Association of Public Land Grant University. Lead by Dean John Hayes (Colorado State University) a steering committee was established and a white paper developed and approved by both organizations outlining the structure and writing teams needed. Work will continue into 2018.
