USDA LIAISON The NAUFRP Executive Committee met two times in 2024 and the General Assembly once. At the March 11-12 meeting in Washington, D.C., the NAUFRP Executive Committee met with federal partners: Josh Stull, Stakeholder Affairs Officer, of the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Dr. David Lytle, Deputy Chief, USDA Forest Service Research and Development, and Dr. Maria Janowiak, serving as both Acting Director, USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub and Acting Director, Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station. The Executive Committee also met with representatives of non-governmental partners including the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities, National Alliance of Forest Owners, National Association of State Foresters and the Society of American Foresters. Staff representatives from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture presented at the meeting. At its September 16th meeting in Loveland, CO the Executive Committee met with representatives of the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities, National Association of Forestry Association Executives and heard program updates from staff representatives of the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. NAUFRP also met with the Society of American Foresters (SAF) to discuss establishing a consortium of organizations with interest in forestry/natural resource research that would help chart research priorities of national interest. It is envisioned that such a consortium would be housed with SAF. The NAUFRP General Assembly meeting on September 17th in Loveland, CO and included presentations and discussions with federal partners Dr. Kevin Kephart, Deputy Director of Institute of Bioenergy, Climate, and Environment, USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and Dr. David Lytle, Deputy Chief, Research and Development, U.S. Forest Service. The General Assembly heard a presentation on enhancing diversity within university forestry and natural resources degree programs by Mississippi State University (MSU). MSU is committed to achieving an undergraduate enrollment that reflects the demographics of the state's high school graduating class by 2030. Noting other universities have similar goals, MSU would like to work with NAUFRP members to accomplish these goals collectively. The General Assembly also heard a presentation about #forestproud, an outreach initiative sponsored by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and supported by a coalition of organizations (including specific universities) working to highlight the impact of forests in daily lives. #forestproud seeks to connect people to the role forests play in supporting jobs, building strong communities, advancing sustainable products, and inspiring a better future through storytelling, partnerships, and visuals. A member workshop was held during the General Assembly to consider Artificial Intelligence (AI) in forestry higher education. Discussion topics included what policies are needed and at what levels within institutions, what do program leaders/administrators need and what do faculty need to help navigate the AI world. The Family Forest Education Award, jointly sponsored by NAUFRP and the National Woodlands Owners Association, was presented at the General Assembly to the University of Idaho and Purdue University for their education and extension work with private forest landowners. The Idaho Forest Stewardship Program, developed and hosted by University of Idaho Extension Forestry, consisted of comprehensive educational seminars, workshops and field experiences on diverse topics in collaboration with local county Extensionists and through partnerships with the USDA Forest Service, Washington State University, and Idaho Tree Farm Program. Purdue University's Forestry and Natural Resources Extension developed and hosted the "Forest Management for the Private Woodland Owner Course" The course provided forest landowners eight learning sessions designed to introduce them to the biology and management of forests, and the resources and professional assistance they can access to help them form their property management goals and pursue their objectives. The General Assembly amended the NAUFRP By-Laws at their meeting on September 17, 2024 to include on the Executive Committee a representative from the 1994 institutions (Tribal Colleges and Universities) that receive funding from the USDA NIFA McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Program. The NAUFRP Policy Chair continued to represent NAUFRP on the coalition 'Forests in the Farm Bill'. Congressional negotiations to reauthorize the Farm Bill have been slow going and NAUFRP has continued to support funding for forestry/natural resource research and education. The NAUFRP Policy Chair is currently the Chair of the USDA Forest Research Advisory Committee (FRAC). FRAC is considering recommendations to the USDA Secretary that include legislation to allow McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Program funding to be used for graduate student tuition in addition to supporting partnerships that connect university forestry/natural resource programs with community colleges for the purpose of growing the pool of prospective graduate students.-$70,998
DEVELOPMENT OF PUBLIC DOCS/INFORMATION Representatives of the NAUFRP International Committee were involved with planning and development of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) World Forest Congress meeting held in Stockholm, Sweden June 23-29, 2024. This is a global forum for exchange of knowledge among scientists from around the world. Over 4,000 attended representing over 100 countries. Several NAUFRP Members (Don Hodges, Univ of KY and Robert Burns, West VA Univ) have leadership roles, formally representing NAUFRP and the United States, within the IUFRO organization. NAUFRP representatives made presentations within the theme and their expertise at the Congress. The NAUFRP Education Committee liaisons with the professional Society of American Foresters (SAF) on a number of issues. One of these is SAF accreditation of NAUFRP member schools. The committee has focused on helping individual institutions meet certain new SAF accreditation requirements that have come down to SAF from a higher accreditation governing body, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The Education Committee was also involved in leading the September General Assembly workshop on Artificial Intelligence and the review and discussion of Natural Resource Enrollment Trends over the last decade. The NAUFRP Communications Committee took the lead on first time sponsorship of an Exhibit Booth at the 2024 Society of American Forests annual convention. The purpose was to increase SAF member awareness of the value of university research, education and extension programs. The Committee continued to oversee the website and publication of two issues of the newsletter 'NAUFRP News' published in 2024 (www.naufrp.org/newsletter). NAUFRP institutions continued to populate the NAUFRP webpage with ongoing forestry and natural resource research projects at NAUFRP universities that demonstrate the impacts and benefits of their research. These are intended to be shared with a wide ranging audience of partners and policy makers. The Communications Committee also developed a one-page white paper discussing the benefits and value of NAUFRP. The NAUFRP Extension Committee is responsible for managing the annual Family Forests Education Award cosponsored with the National Woodland Owners Association. In 2024, the recipient of the individual program award was presented to Purdue University for their course on Forest Management for the Private Woodland Owner. The Comprehensive Program Award was presented to the University of Idaho for their Forest Stewardship Program which provided educational and extension opportunities for private forest landowners. (See Annual Meeting section for more detail as needed.) The Diversity Committee worked on requested revisions from the Executive Committee on wording and criteria for the newly established Dr. Yeonsu Kim Champion Award. This Award honors an individual, program, or organization demonstrating sustained dedication to inclusive excellence, promoting a sense of belonging, and achievement in equal access at the NAUFRP member organizations and beyond. Plans are to recognize the award recipient at the General Assembly meeting in future years. The Executive Committee accepted changes to the award by vote at the September 16th meeting. Implementation is planned for 2025. Regional Work: Southern NAUFRP continued the annual Comparative Data Survey of their region's institutions for information on faculty salaries, tenure positions, student enrollment numbers, graduate assistantships. This data was highlighted at both the September Executive Committee and General Assembly meetings. Other regions are discussing developing similar surveys. The NAUFRP North Central Region held quarterly virtual meetings with member representatives with focus on student enrollments at the undergraduate and graduate levels and faculty positions. The Western Region met in person July 15-16 at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR where they discussed accreditation issues and ways to increase collaboration. The Northeast Region is currently without a chair so there was no report.-$56,229
ANNUAL MEETING The NAUFRP General Assembly met in-person on September 17, 2024 (Loveland, CO) for the annual meeting. Focus was given to a draft report ("Student Enrollments in Natural Resource Academic Programs in the United States: A Ten-Year Update" by Terry Sharik and Tara Bal: College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI) on undergraduate and graduate student enrollment trends in natural resource (NR) education over a 10-year period. This builds on previous studies by the authors and covers the period 2005 - 2022 at the 82 member institutions of NAUFRP. The authors plan to publish the manuscript after a peer review process is completed. The General Assembly participants discussed the findings and conclusions with the authors. The current study considered graduate student enrollment for the first time as well as took into account Pandemic era enrollments, the latter directly addressed concerns of declining enrollments nationwide across all disciplines. The programs covered include Environmental Science and Studies, Natural Resources Conservation and Management, Fisheries and Wildlife, Forestry, Natural Resources Recreation, Range Science and Management, Watershed Science and Management, and Wood Science/Products. The findings indicate NR programs have increased enrollments in contrast with national declines in other fields. The data covers trends across academic areas, demographics, degree and institutions type and regions. Documenting increasing enrollment trends in NR fields is important as an indicator of student preference in these fields allowing for the appropriate administrative allocation of resources to support these programs. A link on the NAUFRP website to the study will be provided with the author?s approval after it is published.-$7,644

The Western Region met in person July 15-16 at Oregon State University in Corvallis,
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt1USDA LIAISON The NAUFRP Executive Committee met two times in 2024 and the General Assembly once. Purdue University's Forestry and Natural Resources Extension developed and hosted the "Forest Management for the Private Woodland Owner Course" The course provided forest landowners eight learning
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt2ANNUAL MEETING The NAUFRP General Assembly met in-person on September 17, 2024 (Loveland, CO) for the annual meeting. A link on the NAUFRP website to the study will be provided with the author?s approval after it is published.
