Mission

The auditory verbal center (avc) is a not-for-profir hearing center serving hearing impaired infants, children, adults and their families throughout georgia. Founded in 1977, the center provides a rigorous long-term program of auditory-verbal therapy to assist hearing impaired children learn to hear and speak without the use of sign language or lip reading with the goal of being successfully mainstreamed into normal hearing schools. The agency also provides a full service audiology department to serve hearing impaired individuals of all ages in the community. “Auditory brainstem response testing (abr). This test is used to test newborns as a follow-up after the hearing screening at birth in the hospital. Avc is able to conduct this test without sedation for any child of any age. Approximately 3 of every 1000 children are born deaf while many more children are born with less severe degree of hearing impairment or develop hearing loss within the first few months after birth. The audiology department serves anyone from birth to seniors with diagnostic testing and dispensing of hearing aids. It also provides free hearing screening in the local day care and head start programs. The agency administers the loaner hearing aids bank for the state of georgia providing loaner hearing aids free of charge to needy recipients.”

IN DECEMBER, IT GRADUATED 14 CLIENTS WHO ARE NOW LISTENING AND SPEAKING CHILDREN USING NO SIGN LANGUAGE AND MAINSTREAMED IN THE REGULAR CLASSROOMS WITH THEIR HEARING PEERS. DUE TO THE INCREASE IN THE DEMAND FOR AUDITORY VERBAL THERAPY SERVICES THROUGHOUT GEORGIA, AVC HAS A LOCATION IN MACON AND ONE IN ATLANTA. IN AN EFFORT TO SERVE AS MANY DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING CHILDREN IN GEORGIA, THE CENTER NOW OFFERS TELE-THERAPY FOR THOSE FAMILIES WHO CANNOT MAKE THE DRIVE TO ONE THE PHYSICAL LOCATIONS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THE AUDITOLOGY DEPARTMENT HAS CONTINUED TO SERVE AN AVERAGE OF 25 NEW CLIENTS EACH MONTH IN ADDITION TO ITS EXISTING CLIENT BASE. IT HAS ALSO DOUBLED THE NUMBER OF AUDITORY BRAINSTEM RESPONSE TESTING (ABR). THIS TEST IS USED TO TEST NEWBORNS AS A FOLLOW-UP AFTER THE HEARING SCREENING AT BIRTH IN THE HOSPITAL. AVC IS ABLE TO CONDUCT THIS TEST WITHOUT SEDATION FOR ANY CHILD OF ANY AGE.
